On April 19, Council en- dorsed the release of a draft of the Town's new Official Plan for public comment. This document is the Town's vision for the future «to the year 2021, and com- plements the six directions in the Town's Strategic Plan. The review has embraced seven objectives with a community-based ap- proach: A twenty year horizon with 5 year updates; a focus on key elements in- volving environment, quality of life, and the eco- nomic potential of the Town; watershed and eco- systems; growth parameter of 60,000 - 70,000 persons; updating and/or consolida- tion of existing secondary plans; and the introduction of a user-friendly, plain lan- _guage format, with clear mapping. A series of support stud- ies preceded the drafting of the Plan, focusing on com- mercial needs of the Town; the role of the rural area; an evaluation of the Silver Creek Subwatershed area; and urban design elements for planned growth in the urban areas of Acton and Georgetown. The Land Use Policies are divided into three broad cat- egories: Environment and Open Space, Urban Areas, and the Agricultural/Rural Area. Council has proposed that public comments be re- ceived by July 30, 2004. As part of this process the Town will be holding three Public Information Centers in Acton, Georgetown and the rural community prior to the end of June 2004. Also, the Plan will be posted on the Town's web site at www.haltonhills.ca <http:// Mayor ay Corner By Rick Bonnette www.haltonhills.ca> for viewing.
