THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2004 Pre-conseiaunn work begins on Mill Street By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner A survey crew docu- mented existing cracks in the foundations of buildings on Mill Street as part of a pre-condition survey before the reconstruction of Mill Street begins next week. Using the information, Halton will be able to deter- mine if the buildings settle during the $1.9-million project to replace water and sewer pipes and reconstruct the road. On Monday, Halton con- struction supervisor Leonard Verwey said the prep work being done this week would include bring- ing in equipment and putting up detour signs, and weather permitting, construction would begin next week in the block from Main Street to Willow Street. He said he expected signs detouring heavy trucks to Wallace Street would be in- stalled this week, along with some signage in the down- town area. The joint Halton/Town project involves replacing the water mains on Mill from Main to Bower Av- enue, Elgin and Frederick Street from Mill to Bower and on Wilbur from Church to Bower. The sanitary sewer will be replaced on Mill from John to Elgin and Wilbur to Bower, on Elgin and Frederick from Mill to Bower, and on Wilbur from Church to Bower. Storm sewers will be re- placed on Mill from Elgin easterly, and Wilbur to Fel- low and on John at Bower. Construction on Mill Street is scheduled for com- pletion by the end of June, and the whole project should be finished by the end of July. Verwey said since the work in the first block is re- placement of the watermain only; construction should take between a week-and-a- half and two weeks. The road will be closed during the day, but the plan is to re- open it for traffic at night in that first block from Main to Willow. Verwey said where both the watermain and sewer are being replaced, he expects the block will be closed longer and not re-opened to traffic at night. What's Your Beef?
