10 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, MAY 13, 2004 Closing of obstetrics concerns Chudleigh Ted Chudleigh, MPP. Halton, said he is concerned with the recent closing of the obstetrics unit at Georgetown hospital, part of the William Osler Health Centre. "When governments both provincially and federally are preaching about improved ac- cess to health care, it is Principles for Effective Stock Investing disturbing that expectant mothers in Halton Hills have to travel further to get the care necessary for their babies," Chudleigh said. "I want to know if this reduction in serv- ice in Georgetown is due to funding shortfalls in George- town or among the Peel hospitals that make up the li- Please jom our special guest Dr. Keith Murnighan, Professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management as he talks about investor psychology and why people invest the way they do: s Understanding your own investment psychology a Decision-making pitfalls to avoid « Preventive measures you can take when investing We'll also speak with Richard Waugh, the new President and CEO of Scotiabank. Chudleigh said he would be very distressed if a lack of funding to the larger hospitals in Peel that make up the William Osler Hospital group, had resulted in closed programs and departments in Georgetown. "That wouldn't be right. Reducing service in Halton Hills to cover funding short- falls in Peel is not a fair solution. Ultimately this is the issue. According to a William Osler Health Centre news re- lease the consolidation of the Obstetrics and Paediatrics units from Georgetown to Brampton is motivated en- tirely by a $27 million funding shortfall," said Chudleigh. "Is the shortfall due to high costs in Georget- own or in Peel?" Chudleigh said that in either case this is a step backward despite promises of the new Liberal government of Dalton McGuinty to improve health care. He said a funding prob- lem in health care would be a new low for the Liberals in failing to meet their election promises. I met Mr. Lynn McLaren at Acton High '$chool in 1980 when he encouraged me to join the basketball team. At that time we did not have try-outs, lucky for me. I still don't know how Coach managed to struggle through all those hours teaching me how to play the game. I had to learn how to shoot prop- erly, to dribble, and the rules. But the most impor- tant lesson I learned was how to play as part of a team, to depend on my team and let them depend on me. Those team mates became my constant com- panions over the next five years and Coach was my second father. During a time when most young women struggle with fit- ting in, I belonged and I fit in. We accepted each other and we became a family. Coach was the Vice- Principal at Acton High School and he created that environment throughout the entire school. We all belonged there, he knew each of us individually and took the time to lis- HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEBBIE @ * ten and to care about us. It certainly wasn't ideal, there were still fights and people who didn't like each other, that's what happens in a family. I owe him a debt of gratitude for never taking up smoking. Like most teenagers I decided to try smoking one afternoon before a basketball prac- tice. Clearly Coach smelt the smoke on me and made me run and run and run for an hour. I was ac- tually green and it was the last time I smoked. I have many fond memories of Coach. I remember the sound of the change in his pock- ets when he took a jump shot. I remember him run- ning his hands through his hair in frustration during a game, wanting more than anything to be out there with us. I remember his laughter and his warmth. Thank you does not even begin to express my gratitude. I love you Coach, you are an amaz- ing person. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Linda Thomson Robson, Class of 1985.
