Una Lalande, owner of Acton's sports store has been supplying Acton Mi- nor Ball with uniforms and equipment for many years. In the past few years, Acton Minor Ball has moved to a system of providing uni- forms to its players that do not have to be returned. In prior years, players were re- quired to return their uniforms at the end of the season. There were a large number of mismatched jer- seys that accumulated from years past that were not be- ing used. "We wanted to see the uniforms go to a place where the kids would really appreciate having them, rather than just throwing them out," said Judith Kirkness of Acton Minor Ball, explaining why the ef- fort was made to donate the jerseys. Una researched the possibility of having the jer- seys donated to children during a family vacation in Peurto Plata in the Domini- can Republic. So the Lalande family travelled to Puerto Plata last month with as many old Acton uniforms as they could carry, as well as some new baseball equip- ment, including bats and balls, donated by Una's store. With help from their tour guide, a Canadian citizen living with her husband in the Domincan, Una together with husband Brian, and their children Jay and Monique, were able to go into the small community of Rio San Juan and personally hand out the jerseys to a large number of children who were playing baseball. "Tt brought smiles to our faces to see the joy of these children running around in blue Acton jerseys, some- kids in the Dominican thing that many of our chil- dren take for granted. To see them all gathered together with worn baseballs and bats made from thick branches, just to play the game in a small field owned by a local farmer left us in awe. Now with the Acton jerseys they will be able to travel to other small communities and play asa full recognizable team," Una noted. "We all just wanted to make a difference and with the generous donation from Acton Minor Ball we were able to help out a bunch of kids who just love the game of baseball. They were all very thankful," Brian added.
