Tae = Writer appalled vendor sells knives to boys at Trunk Sale To the Editor: On Saturday, my family and I decided to go to the trunk sale for the first time this year. We had visited a lot of the vendors. As we passed a table with a man selling knives and leather items, my husband and'I made the comment "Did you notice it was all kids around his table?" He did appear to be watching his table area and the kids. We visited more vendors and one particularly sticks out in my mind. There were two boys at her table with a 12-inch handled knife with a brown case in their hands. These boys were around the same age as my two chil- dren. A third friend joined them and handed the lady a $5 bill. He then proceeded to remove the knife, flash it at his friends and shoved it in his pants. I was appalled that this lady just sold a child that knife. I informed her that it was illegal to sell it and she didn't seem to care. I asked the boy where his parents were and he said at home. I asked how old he was and he said "10." I told him it was illegal for him to have a knife that size but he didn't seem to care and walked away from me. I then went to the two trunk sale organizers and told them about what I had just witnessed. They said there wasn't much they could do but they knew what vendor I meant and that they Acton Jiu-Jitsu Martial Arts and Self Defence for Adults & Children Kya Wea (519)853-2424 5A Mill Street, East E-mail: jiujitsul@sympatico.ca Proud members of the Canadian Jiu Jitsu Associations DAT ATL ED ATANYODLR PRICE BSCDINNIN LTTE, | would go speak with her. They also suggested that I talk to the Village Constable. I stopped at the village of- fice and spoke to the officer on duty; he again said there wasn't much he could do but would go and walk the area. It deeply concerns me as to why that child felt he needed to have that knife. At 10 years old I'm sure there is a more appropriate toy for him to be playing with then a large, real knife. I'm not even sure that his parents would know what he probably spent his allow- ance on. I hope that whom ever this boy is that he is some- what responsible enough to go and show his parents. I would hope he has the sense to know that it is a weapon and not a toy!! And I cer- tainly hope that it does not get taken to school and God forbid someone elses child gets hurt by it!! That would be a tragedy for no reason!! Please take a moment and ask your son if he was this child, and make him aware of the responsibility of own- ing a knife!! A very concerned parent
