10 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 2004 Ethel Gardiner... Continued from 4 Public school trustee since 1995 when she was elected following a 39-year teach- ing career, much of it in Halton. In 1997, she was first elected to the role of Chair of the Board, a posi- tion she held for six consecutive years before stepping down in Novem- ber of 2003. Her accomplishments regionally and provincially are numerous including leading the Halton District School Board in new and precedent-setting initia- tives, participation on a wide range of Board and community committees, and making presentations to Ministry task forces. Most memorable was Gardiner's support for Va- riety Village West a few years ago when friends and ~ colleagues pledged more than $12,500 to have her run a lap in the board's Spe- cial Athletes' Track Meet. It exemplifies Gardiner's continued support for stu- dents and staff of the Halton District School Board. THE NEW TANNER GIO ERR EI at | Four D. Pets and Suppl s Pet 1e€S 126 Main St. S Rockwood, ON. To the Editor, Last week's local and Georgetown papers did not have any mention of where to vote in advance polls in Acton. The Elections Canada polling car directed my wife and many seniors of my ac- quaintance to St. Alban's Anglican Church in Glen Williams. Doesn't Acton rate an advance polling station to be listed in local papers or on a card? On Friday, June 18, The In- dependent stated the advance polls were open today, for more info contact Mr. Kuglin, the riding returning officer. With the paper arriving at our- door after 6 p.m. it was al- ready too late to make that call as the office closed at 6. I visited Mr. Kuglin at 21 Main St. in Acton on Satur- day morning and pointed out that no place for ad- vance polling in Acton was listed in local papers, and that a lot of polling cards for Acton votes showed Glen Williams as the place for advance polls. He seemed very surprised when I showed him the polling card listing Glen Williams, not Acton. He pointed out that Ottawa was responsible for the cards and for placing ads in pa- pers for advance polling. I feel that someone should be monitoring this and staying on top of it. He said people could vote at 21 Main St. in Acton or at the Legion regardless. So after much to do I found out the answer but feel a lot of other voters who were in need of advance polls didn't and probably lost their chance to exercise their democratic right to vote. © Andy Anderson, Acton Will miss Bellsmith To the Editor, Not that many youth go to church today. I'ma youth and I go to church. The church that I go to is Trin- ity United. After a year of looking for a new minister the church finally found one. His name is Edward Bellsmith. After a year of him teaching us God's word the ministry told us that he can no longer To the Editor, stay with us and we should find a new minister. Edward has taught me a lot and brought me closer to God. I would just like to thank him for everything and I hope he finds another church like this one and we find another minister like him. Farewell Edward, I will miss you Amy-Lynn Hilton Act of kindness I would like to recognize an act of kindness by a gentle- man named Charlie, who is a handyman in our Acton neighbourhood. Last week I lost an envelope full of important bank docu- ments. I spent several days looking inside and outside our home as I thought I may have dropped it coming from the car to our house. I had given up the search, was going to start measures of rectifying the problem with the bank, when on Thurs- day morning there was a knock on our door. The gentleman at the door introduced himself as Charlie and said he found the envelope while cutting the schoolyard grass a block away! I want to thank Charlie for the time taken to return these documents to us. We are very grateful for his kindness. Kim and Bob Sweezie NOTICE YOUR CHIMNEY LATELY? Funds will go toward lawn signs and signs for the Thursday rally at Queen's Park, community displays and printing pre-addressed postcards to the Ontario Minister of Health as well as advertising space in lo- cal and GTA papers and legal injunctions. The Town of Halton Hills has offered to assist by handling the money as it comes in and paying the ~ bills. The Town requests all cheques be made pay- able to "The Town of Halton Hills" and the memo portion read, "Georgetown Hospital." "We need the help of the business community. We need to increase the pres- sure on the Board and also make the Minister of Health aware of how much ofa detrimental impact this will have on our commu- nity. To accomplish this funding is required," says C of C president Norm Paget.
