HES NEW. PONDER JHURSDAY, JULY 8, get Town ball team on a roll | By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Town treasurer Ed DeSousa's shoestring catch in the final inning was the play of the game as Halton Hills politicians and staff downed Milton in their recent annual municipal softball match up. That makes it two in-a-row for the Halton Hills squad that endured four years of losses to Milton, and was more than glad to hand over the Turkey Trophy. Mayor Rick Bonnette praised the batting skills of Recreation and Parks director Terry Alyman, and planning director Bruce MacLean, both who hit homers. "And, I hate to say it, but my wife Josey was awesome --she made about three good plays on third base, and she was on base every time with solid hits --she had better hits than me," Bonnette said, adding it was an all-round good team effort, including strong play from Councillor Bryan Lewis at first, and strong fielding from engineering and public works director Rick Henry, who was wincing days later. Bonnette called DeSousa's last inning catch, with two Milton players in scoring po- sition, "dazzling." "He ran in about 30 feet and just picked it as the ball was about two inches off the ground -- that's a shoestring catch -- and if he would have missed it those two runs would have made it 12-11, and then who knows what else would have happened," Bonnette said. The win against Milton was a good tune-up for the Town in its annual Canada Day slugfest against Glen Williams last Thursday. The Town held the Glen to a 6-6 tie, improving its record to three wins, 17 losses and a tie against the Glen team, which in past years featured a lot of 25-year-old players, ac- cording to Mayor Bonnette, who had some pre-game con- cerns someone would join Acton Councillor Jon Hurst on the disabled list since hurting his knee in the game against Milton. "T get worried about some of the councillors playing, even myself--I'm no spring chicken anymore," Bonnette said. The Glen game was a three- up, three-down affair with the Town playing a strong defen- sive game with a special appearance by newly-elected Wellington Halton Hills MP Mike Chong suiting up for the Town. "We were down three-noth- ing and then went ahead 6-3 and then they scored three runs in the seventh inning when we had to break for the parade," Bonnette said, adding Coun- cillor Jane Fogal and Bryan had strong games. Everyone has made mis- takes in their lives; some are minor, other are major. Ob- viously my brother's choice was major and has affected many, many people. Not just Raymond, his family and friends; but for my brother who now lives with the never-ending pain of causing someone's death, along with his family and friends knowing it was him. Weare all suffering because of it. My mother cries every day, and not because of my brother's mistake but for your family and the loss you have. My brother is unbelievably remorseful healing A SISTER'S STORY and the reason for his si- lence is due to his lawyer's advisory. My brother has wanted to speak with your family and share his feelings and as hard enough as it is, Raymond's mother's com- ment of "wanting to slap my brother in the face" has not made it any easier. He has been going to a coun- sellor to help him deal with this tragedy. So please un- derstand that people do regret the mistakes they make, and know that we are a family that does care and feel for your loss. On behalf of my family, we are truly sorry. It is time now to let the forgiving and healing | process begin.
