THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2004 THE NEW TANNER 9 4 a 3 = MUSIC MAKERS: Some of the former members of George Harvey Secondary School from York, including Acton's Jay Raats (front left), gathered in Acton on Saturday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band's trip to a youth and mu- sic festival in Austria. -- Frances Niblock photo York band holds reunion in Acton By FRANCES NIBLOCK The New Tanner Members of a York high school band made merry as Hilliard, the Acton band won first place at the Canadian Ex- hibition band contest," Elliott said, adding under Hilliard's guidance they also earned a sec- Want new list for grass cutting Town staff will come up with a new list of Town prop- erties where it can cut or reduce maintenance to make up $11,000 needed to cut the grass at the Gellert Centre in Georgetown South. Councillors approved the cutting schedule, but not the dollars, during budget talks in February, a move Mayor Rick Bonnette now says was "probably a bad decision," one that needs to be corrected. He agreed with Acton Councillor Mike O'Leary who said recently that the Town has run a surplus for the past seven years and should be able to come up with the $11,000. O'Leary also said there are areas that are currently main- tained by the Town that could 'TOWN DIGEST get by with fewer cuttings and asked staff to take an- other look at its proposed list of 11 areas where grass-cut- ting could be deleted to save money. "Worse comes to worst, you overspend," Bonnette said, agreeing with O' Leary who said if they couldn't find $11,000 in a multi-million dollar budget, then they need to go back to accounting school. Name game Two proposed policies to name new streets and parks and open spaces in Halton Hills have been sent to the community affairs commit- tee to look at concerns raised by several councillors re- cently. Wards 1/2 Regional Coun- cillor Jane Fogal is unhappy that street names must now be checked with the Regional database to ensure there is no duplication, and most of the names on the Town's data- base have already been used by Burlington, Milton or Oakville. Wards 3/4 Regional Coun- cillor Clark Somerville has some heritage concerns, not- ing that historical names like Esquesing and Nassagaweya wouldn't be allowed because the policy bans non-conven~ tional spellings to avoid confusion. Halton police and Halton Emergency Services will be asked to comment on the street and park naming policies. Opening 'this weekend &, EXCELLENT PICKING they celebrated the 30" anniver- sary of a band trip to Austria in Acton on Saturday, but they didn't make music at their re- union. Thirty of the 48 George Henry Secondary School band members who competed in an international youth music fes- tival reminisced about their 1974 trip as they gathered at the Birchway seniors' residence. The high school band's tie to Acton was its bandmaster -- the late Arthur Hilliard -- who was also bandmaster of the Acton Citizens' Band in the early 1970s. Hilliard often brought his high school band members to play with the Acton Citizens' Band. One of them was Jay Raats, an Acton resident and reunion host, who was 19 when he travelled with his high school band to the prestigious music festival in Austria, where it received a superior rating. "We thought that Acton would be a good place for the reunion because of the ties," Raats said on Friday. "Mr. Hilliard would bring the George Harvey school band up to Acton at fall fair time to play with the Acton Citizens' Band to march in the parade, and our band would put on an afternoon concert," Raats said, adding some high school band mem- bers also came to Acton to play ond and third place finish in the two previous years. Elliott, who was a special guest at the reunion dinner, said it was wonderful to play with the former high school band members and to hear one of them, who hadn't played until recently after 25 years, urge others to pick up their instru- ments again.
