Le wo 25 Mill St. E., Acton EVERY THURSDAY 3-9PM MEDUM PEPPERONIPIZZA we With Village Constable Garry George How to Protect Your Car Against Theft EXERCISE KEY CAUTION - Never leave keys in an unattended car. You may just be running in to get a loaf of bread at the corner store, but that's enough time for a thief to take advantage of you. - Don't link your keys to your identification, whether it be a tag on your key chain or attaching them to your wallet. If you lose your keys or wallet, thieves will know where you live and could steal your car. - If your car is being parked by an attendant, only leave him or her your ignition key. That way, he won't have access to the trunk. - Roll up all windows when you leave your vehicle. PAY ATTENTION TO PARKING : Park in well-lit areas with pedestrian traffic. Visible areas deter thieves. - Turn front wheels toward the curb, apply your emergency break and park in between other cars. These techniques will make it harder for thieves to tow your car. LOCK IT UP - If your car does not come equipped with an antitheft device, consider installing an interior hood or a fuel switch, which prevents fuel from reaching the carburetor. - If you have any valuables or packages, hide and lock them away in the trunk. STOLEN CAR PROTOCOL No matter how many precautions you take, your car can still get stolen. If it does happen, report the loss to the police immediately. Give them: the year, make, model and color of your car; license-plate number; estimated time of theft and car's last parked location. Then, call your insurance company with your policy number. No one wants to be the victim of a car theft, but if your car is stolen, proper and quick action can possibly lead to its recovery. Congratulations la- dies. The next trip to Rama is on Wednesday, August 25 and the bus leaves the Centre at 8:45, so all "gamblers" should be at the Centre by 8:30 am. The cost is $5 and that includes your buffet lunch. A great deal! You might even come back a win- ner, who knows? There is also a trip to Casino Niagara on Wednesday, Sep- tember 14. If you are interested in going to either, please call Ruth at 853-5124. Everyone is looking forward to the Leathertown Festival and we are still looking for volunteers to help man the booth for a couple of hours, selling tickets, on four items: a collector's Maple Leaf sweater, a beautiful doll, a wonderful picture by Acton's own Maria Sallay, plus a ham- per filled with Christmas goodies. We will also be sell- ing Christmas cakes, plus our own recipe books and helping acquaint newcomers to Acton (and old Actonians) with the events and programs offered at the Centre (of which we are justly proud.) It is being held on Sunday August 8 from llam --Spm. Call Eileen Dix 853-0493 or the Centre. What a great way to reacquaint with old friends and make new ones. There was no lucky winner again this week in the 50/50 draw at the Centre. Don't for- get we still have- Friday lunches, cards and bingo at the Centre during the summer. Beat the heat and enjoy the air conditioned Centre, while catching up on events, meet- ing old friends and making new ones. The New Checklist Booklet is available. It consists of a 39 page check list for Seniors is- sued by the Halton Elderly Services and Advisory Com- mittee (E.S.A.C.) full of safety ideas and should help make Senior's homes safer. Well worth making a phone call 1- 866-442-5866 to receive one. It is free, in large print, easy to read and understand. We have a limited amount at the centre. The entertainment commit- tee has done a great job so far this year and is busy planning some exciting trips in the au- tumn. Watch for further announcements. Anyone who has been on trips knows how interesting, and well organized they always are. For more in- formation check the front desk Monday mornings or pick up a flyer. BRANCH nes LEGION NEws . Downsview man killed in Trafalgar Rd. crash Halton Police are investigating a single motor vehicle collision that occurred on Trafalgar Road, south of 15 Side Road, just before 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 24 in which a Downsview man was killed. A van travelling south on Trafalgar Road left the road- way on the soft shoulder to overtake a vehicle, police said. Witnesses indicate that when the driver reentered the trav- elled portion of the roadway he over corrected, lost control and struck a hydro pole on the west side of the road. The male driver, Marcel Sebban, 21, of Downsview was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said a male passen- ger fled the scene but was located a short distance away. Identified as Casey Kennedy, 22, of Toronto, he was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries and then released into police custody on unrelated criminal offences. The police traffic unit is continuing the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact D/Cst. Martin at 825-4747, ext. 5169.
