THURSDAY, JULY 29, 2004 ee ney TANNER 15 Dustin Roskam swings mean bat for HAC The Halton Athletic Club (HAC), held the Gates- America Freight Wood Bat Classic Tournament this past weekend in Milton. Acton athlete Dustin Roskam is a Right Fielder for HAC. HAC hosted this tourna- ment which draws teams from Canada and the U.S. with players who play ball at the elite level. These athletes aspire to play ball at the high- est level and further their education through scholar- ship opportunities. This is Dustin's first year with the organization and he is the youngest member on the 16 and under team. He first started playing ball for local league Acton Minor Ball in 1994, then since 2000 played for the Georgetown Eagles. The Wood Bat Classic Tournament was open to Teams 19 and under. HAC finished with one win and three losses but played ex- ceptionally well. HAC members range in age from 14-16 years of age and the teams they competed against were considerably older, stronger and more experi- enced giving them a slight edge. The HAC team is gaining strength. They recently re- turned from Wheeling, West Virginia and are heading down this week for the Sandlot World Series to be held in Marietta, Georgia. Upon their return they will be hosting another tournament, The Mizuno'Cup, to be held August 6-8. This will also be a 19 and under tournament with at least five American teams attending. Dustin has been consistent with his at bats and on base percentages. Throughout the Fall/Winter/Spring, he par- ticipated in a rigorous training schedule along with his teammates to get them ready for the upcoming sea- son. This included weekly strength training with "Sport Specific Training", hitting workouts with "The Swing Doctor" and weekly prac- tices at the Oakville Sports Centre. Dustin's plans are to con- tinue learning and "sharing a Passion for the Game". Carli Vickery pitched out- standing ball. She got 17 strikeouts in 7 innings. Erika Kosmack once again was strong on second and got a grounder and made the throw to first base for the out. Katelynn Robinson 'also played super, catching for Carli. Katelynn threw a girl out trying to steal third. Danielle Spear made the catch from Katelynn and tagged the runner. Courtney Brown also got a grounder on short stop, but the throw to first was not in time. Part of the game wasn't pretty as Acton scored five runs in the third, unfortu- nately on eight walks, with __ the exception of Amber Sher- wood's hitting and 'scoring Alicia Lee from third. I guess a win is a win. EDGE GRAND VALLEY On July 19 the Squirt girls played Grand Valley for a double point game. It was a very close game, but they did it, They won 10 - 9. Whew! Desiray Ebbinge had a good night; she pitched three innings getting five strikeouts. Desiray than passed the pitching duties over to.Carli Vickery, who in turn did a great jab. A&K I Mill Street E. Church Street Game rained out By Vicki Anderson Acton Squirt Girls played first place Rockwood on July. 22 in a game which was called in the fourth inning because of rain. After the first inning it was 1-1. They scored one in the second. Then Ashley Stokman hit a triple followed up with a lot of walks letting our girls score five runs total, making the score 6-2 for Acton after two innings. In the third Rockwood came back with four runs and then the skies opened up and it just poured ruining the dia- mond and ending the game. The defensive part of the game was the highlight for Acton. The girls were abso- lutely amazing, starting the game with a strikeout and then a walk. The third batter hit the ball to Katrina Harding on second who charged and threw to Amber Sherwood on first base, who then.threw to Desiray Ebbinge on third get- ting the runner out trying to stead third, making a double play. In the top of the third Sher- wood scooped the first hit and touched first for the out. The second batter hit a dou- ble, then stole third, but when she attempted to lead off third, Katelynn Robinson drilled the ball to Ebbinge on third. The girl ran for home. Ebbinge threw back to Robinson who tagged the girl out. It was a coach's dream to see these plays become re- ality especially against the first place team. Coach Mel and the writer were the proudest two coaches around that night. Although the game might not count, it sure counted to us. 50" Wedding Anniversary August 4, 1954 Bill ef Lorraine Gibbs 119 Mill Street East at Wilbur, (Across from the newly open - A Taste of Italy) i Acton Ontario 9-853-5066 | ie] = Reg Mare Pera Pd > ages Bar Magan ere ia eas
