Owner says: Erin taxi business legal, not operating in Acton BY MAGGIE PETRUSHEVSKY The NEY Seunee foe Robichaud is running a fae But she isn't running it in Acton. And it isn't illegal. The former manager of North Halton Taxi began operating a fully approved taxi in Erin/ Hillsburgh last-week. Erin clerk Kathryn Ironmonger said Erin and Erin Township both had taxi licensing bylaws but chose to drop them when the mu- nicipalities amalgamated into the Town of Erin. "Taxi services couldn't make a go of it be- cause we're too small," she said. "So council dropped the bylaw in order to allow opera- tors from other municipalities to come here and provide service for our residents." A bylaw just stops operators from other ar- eas from picking up in your municipality, Ironmonger said. Nothing prevents them from dropping a passenger where they are not li- censed to operate. If Robichaud lived in Erin, the single re- quirement would be her ability to satisfy the building department about zoning for her busi- ness, [ronmonger said. Most residential zones allow for home occupations. But since Robichaud is operating from her Halton Hills residence, Erin has no interest in the business. Robichaud, who lives on the Milton/Halton Hills border, said she is getting very tired of having people follow her around because they're under the impression she is operating © an illegal taxi in Acton. She does have several vehicles at her home which did belong to North Halton Taxi, she said, but only one is operating and that is Her private vehicle. North Halton owner Dorothy Dolson gave her the van when the former taxi company closed April 30. It is in Robichaud's name, carries her insurance, has no light or other taxi identification and still has a meter because that's expensive to remove. On the other hand, now that she and her husband have started a new taxi service in Erin, they are using this vehicle and prefer to use a meter although that is not required in Erin. From the time she put the van back on the road as her private vehicle in mid June peo- ple have been following her, she said. "It's ridiculous. ve a husband and four kids," she said. "When I come to town, of course the van's full. But they aren't custom- ers. They're my family. I'm being treated like... iy 1 was a criminal." She maintains she has been followed by cabs from both the current taxi companies in Georgetown, Town of Halton Hills staff and even the police. She believes they're trying to catch her picking up or dropping off a fare. Robichaud said her "illegal taxi" is the talk of the town. When she first asked a friend about this illegal cab she was hearing about, she was informed it was her van. "Meanwhile there was an illegal taxi oper- ating here," she said. "I have pictures of it and everything. Even of money changing hands. But it wasn't mine." The taxi has since stopped operating, she said. Robichaud has contacted the Attorney Gen- eral's office about what she sees as unfair about the Town's handling of the case against North Halton Taxi. She has also told them about how the North Halton vehicles at her home are being vandalized although she can't prove it to police satisfaction so no investiga- tion is being undertaken. "It couldn't be better," said volunteer George Hargrave. "Every Saturday the sale has run has been perfect weather for custom- ers and vendors. Actually, the response has been much more than we expected. It's great to see everyone out. People come each week to shop and socialize. It's a real community event," Hargrave continued. Following an appeal for more help, volunteers were surprised when about ten people stepped up to help out at the weekly event, in- cluding Crime Stoppers of Halton. "They've all been super...really eager to help," said Hargrave. _ "The first week it took us a bit of extra time to get eve- rything set, but now it's running like clockwork," | Canada's Original - said Jake Kuiken, another original Trunk Sale volun- teer. Vendors are still coming from all over, including Barrie, Cambridge, Brampton and locally. The volunteers noted that there is a large variety of treas- ures for bargain hunters. Everything from free kittens to candy-corn to antiques can be found. This past Sat- urday, there was even a young boy, maybe five years old, with a lemonade stand. Volunteers were a little concerned about closing the sale on long weekends, however, soon found that many vendors didn't mind having a day off either. "We advertise when we aren't open, tell each ven- dor and we post signs," said Kuiken. Only one vendor showed up on the Canada Day long weekend. He was apparently quite excited Trunk Sale CLOSED.
