12 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 2004 Respect for one's neighbour works two ways - writer To the Editor, Eric Boles' letter re cat owners responsibilities seems to affirm rather than rebut Mr. Millard's earlier comments. Respect for one's neigh- bours works two ways. The person who lets his cat roam free quite probably has suffered disrespect from his neighbours by way of loud music, bark- ing dogs or any number of other annoyances. The point being that when one lives in close proximity to others annoyances can be expected and tolerance is in order. It is a rare person who has not irked a neigh- bour in one way or another. Real respect involves tol- erance for habits and preferences that conflict with our own. It is funny to hear cat complaints from people who claim in the next Hey Everybody! A quote from D.H. Law- rence might apply here: "You love me so much you want to put me in your pocket. And I should die there suffocated." Anyone can be an animal lover if all animals are locked up and out of sight. In speaking of responsi- bility, wouldn't it be a parent's responsibility to put a cover on a child's sand pit when not in use? Surely people 'can't think that all animals other than cats use little flush toilets! Humane societies do rec- ommend that cats be kept indoors, but that is mainly for the cat's safety. People who let cats roam know of the dangers. They also know that it is a cat's na- ture to roam free. Studies have shown that animals meant to wander, when kept in captivity, are sub- ject to behavioral problems and other aberrations. There wouldn't be so many 'missing pet' posters if there were fewer people bent on re-shaping nature to fit their specifications. Over last week- end there were several more reports of stolen items from vehicles and unlocked sheds. If it's important to you or you don't want it stolen, lock it up or put it in a safe place and not in your car overnight. If someone can see it, they may try to take it. Bicycles, cell phones, tools and loose change are the most popular items to steal. Keep them out of view to anyone passing by, police said. Thieves...
