THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2004 THE NEW TANNER Letters Potholes make Acton feel more like home To The Editor: Everything old is new again. All long term residents of Acton must miss the bumpy Main Street since the new top has been completed. To imagine a street with no potholes or bumps wouldn't feel like home. : But take heart, it will be back to normal soon. The plan- ners and engineer have been wise enough to place a number of manhole covers 3-4 inches below the road surface. With a little erratic driving, you will think it is July again be- NELLIS CONSTRUCTION LIMITED ROAD BUILDIN EARTH MOVING R.R. #1 Acton 853-0960 fore any improvements were made. It feels like Acton again. Yours truly, Floyd Gill. Return to Sender? To the Editor: We live in very peculiar times. For instance, sending a registered mail parcel from England to Canada should be easy, and take a couple of weeks. Well, I guess those days are gone. A registered parcel was sent to me from England on the 16" of June. Guess what? It seemed to vaporize- no one knew any- thing about it - when it was not delivered I assumed it had been stolen. I knew that it had got as far as Mississauga as per tracking it - then nothing. I called the post office -- even asked the police for help. So now I find that the par- cel was in Mississauga on June 22. Suddenly on Oct 1, it was returned to England- that only took four months. It was in the sender's hands on Oct 5 back in England. Reason for sending it back- the sender's address was not complete -- and for security- this was needed. Funny how quickly it was returned to sender consider- ing the sender's address was incomplete. Wonder how they do that? John Shadbolt, Acton. College campus suggested To the Editor: I think in future that the Town of Halton Hills should try to attract a post secondary institution (like a college) to put a campus in Acton. How big was Milton when they ended up with a heavy equipment campus years ago? A post secondary campus would provide some jobs but also educate our young people. Education is knowledge and knowledge is money (otherwise making future better paid taxpayers.) Thank you for your time. Yours truly, Norman Foote, Acton. Erin man located On Wednesday October 6, 2004 Central Region O.P.P Emergency Response Team members along with mem- bers of the Georgian Bay Volunteer Search and Res- cue Team, located the body of a missing Erin Township man, John Tilcox. Mr. Tilcox was located de- ceased in a rural field in the Town of Mono, Dufferin County. Mr. Tilcox was reported missing to the Guelph OPP Detachment on Friday October 1 when he did not arrive at his place of work. His vehicle was subse- quently located near the 10th Side Road and Highway 10. His death is not consid- ered suspicious. Members of the Dufferin O.P.P and the Coroners Office are continu- ing the investigation. « Love Mom, Dad, Mitch, Bailey BEATON ROOFING SERVING ACTON FOR 20 YEARS Flat Roofs Skylights Asphalt Shingles (519) 856-9784 G&S Excavatinc Lr. I want everyone in Acton to know that credit card fraud is a serious problem, for which eve- ryone pays. Protecting your credit cards makes sense. FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CREDIT CARD CRIME; 1) Report lost or stolen credit cards to the card issuer immediately. 2) Photocopy your credit cards, so you have a record of the account num- bers, expiry dates and card issuers' phone numbers so you can quickly report lost or stolen cards. Keep the photocopies in a convenient, secure location. 3) Use caution if you decide to give your credit card number over the phone. 4) Never volunteer your card number to callers who tell you that you have won a prize, a trip or are eligible to win a free gift. This could result in unauthorized changes to your ac- count. 5) Deal only with reputable companies for mail order transactions. Exercise caution especially if the Company is outside Canada. 6) Avoid leaving credit cards or other valuables in a locker at a recreational facility, or public place, even ifit can be locked. Do not leave your credit cards in your car, or any other vehicle. Many cards are stolen from glove compart- ments. 7) 8) More credit cards are stolen in the workplace than any other location. Never leave them unattended. 9) Never lend your credit cards to any- one. NOTICE YOUR CHIMNEY LATELY?
