THE NEW TANNER 15 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2004 Bantam AE Tanners win two BY HAL AITKEN The Bantam AE Tanners scored victories against Elora and Orangeville in last weeks action. TANNERS 5 ELORA 4 The Tanners won their home opener by a score of 5 -- 4 over the visitors from Elora on Tuesday, October 5. The Tanners opened a 3- 0 lead in the 2nd period on two goals by Gordy McKeon and a single by Michael McKeon. Both of Gordy's goals came on hard slap shots, the first goal as- sisted by defencemen Scott Hofland the second by Bryan Curry. Sandwiched between McKeon's goals was a score by brother Michael assisted by Gordy. Throughout the Ist period the Tanners defense of David Elop, Taylor McNabb, Scott Hofland, Tyler- Bandy and Luca Mazzucca easily handled Elora's offense stopping rushes and moving the puck up the ice with ease. Elora scored late in the 2nd period then added two more to even the score at 3- 3 with just less than 5 minutes left in the game. At this point the Tanners seemed to be taken off their game by Elora's aggressive approach and the game looked in doubt. The boys got things going shortly af- ter the tying goal when Luca Mazzucco scored on a hard slapshot from outside Elora's blueline. Curry as- sisted on Luca's goal. The Tanners fifth goal and eventual winner was scored by Nik Aitken with 2:43 left to play. David Elop and Dylan Creasey combined to hold the puck in Elora's end, Aitken picked up Creasey's pass, made a deft move to get past the defender then sent a _ hard accurate wrist shot into the top corner of the net over the goaltenders glove. The Tanners worked hard to extend their lead but were held off the scoreboard. Elora pulled their goaltender and scored with 33 seconds remaining to make it close. The Tanners controlled the puck and ran out the clock for the victory. TANNERS 9 ORANGEVILLE 5 The Tanners travelled to Orangeville on Oct.8 and came up with 9-5 victory to remain undefeated in league play with two wins and a tie. The Tanners balanced attack produced goals from all line combinations and from the defense. The game featured two goal performances by Michael McKeon, Nik Aitken, Luca Mazzucco, and Gordy McKeon. Strong goaltending from Adrian Eppinger and Dirk Van Soelen helped secure the win. The Ist period ended 2-2 on Tanner goals by Michael McKeon assisted by Bryan Curry and Dylan Creasey's unassisted with just 18 sec- ond remaining in the period. In the 2nd period the Tan- ner's added four more goals while allowing only one Orangeville goal. The first goal of the period came from Gordy McKeon assisted by Taylor McNabb. Luca Mazzucco powered his way through Orangeville defend- ers to scored two goals in a row both unassisted. Nik Aitken scored his first of the night with 9 seconds remain- ing in the period off a strong play by Tyler Bandy who earned the only assist giving the Tanners a 6-3 lead. Early in the third period the Tanners had difficulty handling Orangeville's de- termined forecheckers resulting in two goals for the home side. Tanner goaltender Dirk Van Soelen made some key saves be- fore team got back on track scoring three times to se- cure the victory. Third period goals came from Michael McKeon assisted by Scot Hofland and Aitken, Aitken got his sec- ond assisted by Michael McKeon and lastly Gordy McKeon scored from Mazzucco and Alex Wenzel. The Tanners displayed strong team play and hard work from all. A rare scor- ing outburst and robust play highlighted this game. Defencemen Dave Elop al- though held off the score sheet played a strong game keeping Orangeville attackers from setting near the Tanners goal with some hard hits. ACTON TANNERS LOSE The Acton Novice Tan- ners travelled to Oakville for their second road game and were defeated by a score 6 to | on October 10. The Tanners had chances to score but the puck hit the post or missed going in by inches. The only Tanner goal was scored by Bradley Bollert with an assist to Ian Thompson. The Countryside Mayor's Alliance is comprised of the smaller municipalities within the GTA that make up 60% of the land mass. This includes Milton, Halton Hills, to Scugog. We discussed many issues with . Minister John Gerretsen, including Mississauga's request to dissolve Peel Regional Government. In the long term, this could have a negative impact on Halton Hills. We also discussed the preservation of agricultural lands and discussed the Minister supporting the draft GTA Agriculture Plan. The Minister is still going over the document. All the Mayors raised concerns with respect to the "Places to Grow" Provin- cial initiative. We all _acknowledge that this is the first time in 30 years that the Province has come to the Municipal planning table, but we still have concerns. Ours in Halton Hills is the projected growth that will eventually merge Georgetown to Milton. Also discussed was the proposed Provincial Gas Tax that may only be going to municipalities with pub- lic transit. The Minister was very gracious and listened to the thirteen Mayor's con- cers. M4 Hometown news that people read! * ek OK Halton Hills is a commu- nity that cares! Throughout the year may citizens of Halton Hills volunteer with organizations to host worth- while events to make our community a better place. From baseball tournaments to dog walks and special banquets, we have it all. Speaking of a community that cares, there were so many volunteers from Halton Hills and Milton who came together to search for 9 year old Kate Flanagan on Sunday, October 3. Little Kate went missing for over nine hours. She was found safe and sound at about 1:20 a.m. by local residents Keith and Sharon Carmen. Councillor Bryan Lewis and myself were on hand to witness over 200 volunteers offering to help search for Kate. Members of Halton Regional Police, area Police Departments, Halton Hills and Milton Fire Departments, Rural Watch, and the Rural Com- munity Consultation Committee all provided as- sistance. This speaks volumes for our commu- nity, and we are very proud of everyone. Thankfully, it was a happy ending for the family. + + x € Have you taken the "Na- ture Challenge"?
