4 THE NEW TANNER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2004 Robert Li Robert Little students, staff and families participated in the 5" Annual International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 6. It was also Crazy Hat Day so the whole community got to see this mass participation! This was the annual premier event of the Active & Safe Routes to School program. It was a mass celebration around the world of active transpor- tation (i.e. walking, cycling, skipping, etc.). This event cre- ated a higher level of awareness of the issues sur- rounding the journey to and from school. As the number of parents driving their children to and from school has in- creased, the number children walking to and ttle walked to school 5 from school has decreased. The themes that were pro- moted during iWALK included: - Increasing daily physical ac- tivity - Raising awareness on how safe and accessible walking is in our community - Creating a healthier environ- ment by decreasing traffic congestion and minimizing air pollution around the school - Developing community co- hesion and promoting social interaction It is hoped that Jnternational Walk to School Day will be- gin to reverse the habit of driving to school. Children could walk, run, cycle, in-line skate or any other safe means that would help them take an active route to school. Parents were invited to walk with their children to school. Those chil- dren who must take the bus were encouraged to walk to their bus stop and parents who must drive their children were encouraged to arrange a safe drop-off point with adult su- pervision, which was approximately a 15 minute walk from the school. Bussed students participated in a walk around the school for the rec- ommended 15 minutes. Parents and staff who walked children to school; took along two or three or more other kids and established a Walking School Bus. The more the merrier! Robert Little's Golden Shoe Awards will be presented to the Primary and Junior classes with the high- est percentage of walkers. Robert Little School students give a thumbs up to International Walk to School Day. They made the day even cooler by parading in their crazy hats for Crazy Hat Day. - Submitted photo # And more em, O 0/ EX model show * 2.4 L DOHC engine 4-speed Steptrot alarm # AM/FMICD stereo # Cruise control Other rate of 2.10240.199%) $25,595'$ 12 650$22,260) LX trom $25,595, 2004 Rio S MSRE hange without nati 60/72 months.
