If all Canadians partici- pate, The Year of the Veteran will be a year to re- member and a year of remembrance that builds on the annual tradition of Re- membrance Day and Veterans' Week. This Veterans' Week, we are remembering the Italian campaign, the 20-month struggle to liberate Italy. It was a battle that involved nearly 100,000 Canadians and left nearly 6,000 dead. Recently, we followed the trail of the veterans of the Italian Campaign who, 60 years ago, surrendered the comfort and safety of home to become exporters of peace and freedom. Across Italy, we found cemeteries with row on row of tomb- stones engraved with the Maple Leaf. We also found towns teeming with people eagerly waving the maple leaf in tribute to the Cana- dians they remember as liberators and as friends. In the town of Cesena, the central square was filled with veterans, dignitaries, local families and towns- people as we honoured Smoky Smith. Smoky has always been one of a kind. Now he is also the last of his kind. The last living Canadian who earned the Victoria Cross. Smoky single-handedly took on enemy tanks and troops while protecting a Lt a 4 Nj :AN FAMILY DISCOUNT STORE . Lest We F orget 12 Main Street, North,Acton wounded Canadian soldier. Hailed as a one-man army, Smoky prevailed and his story would inspire our troops to hold a key bridge- head against continued attacks. His legendary cour- age was a portrait of thousands more Canadian Veterans, who made the* Maple Leaf the badge of bravery throughout the Ital- ian Campaign. Every Veterans' Week is a battle against the amnesia of time and a mission to re- mind all Canadians that we have reason to be proud of the achievements of our Veterans and reason to be humbled by the scale of their sacrifice.
