Gerald Rennie From the comfort of wood stoves to the romance of a roaring fireplace, some three million Canadian house- holds enjoy the warmth and ambience that only wood can bring. Today, wood burning is also safer, cleaner, more convenient, and more energy-efficient than ever. If you're shopping for a wood heating system or thinking about upgrading your existing unit, con- sider only a highly efficient appliance certified to the standards of CSA 415 or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Certified systems not only save on heating costs. They also use up to one-third less wood, produce much less smoke and give a cleaner, more efficient burn. Once your new system is installed, make sure to burn only clean, well-seasoned wood that has been split and dried properly. Never use gasoline, kerosene or charcoal to start your fire or you could end up with more heat than you bargained for, CMHC warns. Brampton recently held information sessions to discuss plans for an en- vironmental assessment for the project, prompting Mayor Rick Bonnette to write Brampton's mayor because he felt Halton Hills was "somewhat be- ing bullied." He asked that Brampton/ Peel staff come to Council to explain the proposal that will leave some rural residents with a six-lane highway through their property. "There's a need to im- prove transportation, nobody is denying it, but I think we have to work with other municipalities," Bonnette said, adding full- page newspaper ads make the project seem like a "done deal." Bonnette wants a joint ' staff/political committee set up to deal with mutual issues, noting Brampton has not responded to a No- vember 22 resolution from Halton Hills to discuss the highway proposal.
