As leaders at MSB, Student Council wanted to demonstrate concern and caring by collecting funds directly from students for students. They wanted to organize on their own and not through parents or staff. Discussions in class, in Home Base and a Council meeting touched on students' TRIBES goals of participation and responsibility with focus on our global community. The tsunami disaster was an event that impacted the entire world and motivated the students to act. "The students felt strongly that they wanted direct donations. They made announcements and class visits," says Rhys Bennett, a teacher who assisted the students in coordinating the effort. "They also wanted to raise the money in a timely manner so that they could participate in the federal government's dol- lar-for-dollar matching program," added Bennett. "We all need to help each other in times of need. I can only imagine what the kids are go- ing through," said one of the student leaders. The student donations were taken to the Red Cross in Milton. $545.40 was raised and donated. They surpassed their goal of $200 in the two-day drive.
