THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 2005 THE NEW TANNER 13 Bantam Tanners notch two more playoff wins By Hal Aitken Acton Home Hardware Bantam AE Tan- ners completed the Tri-County round-robin play-off with victories over Elora on March 2. and Hespeler on March 4. With the victories the Tanners are likely to advance to the Tri- County championship final with.a record of 4 wins and one loss. Acton 5 Elora 3 The Tanners took an early 3-0 lead with two unassisted goals by Michael McKeon and a single by Luca Mazzucco from David Tysoe and Gordy McKeon, before allowing Elora to tie the match with three consecutive goals in the second period. During the second period the Tanners stopped skating hard, something they do often against aggressive hitting teams like Elora. In the third period after the game remained tied for a long time the Tanners began to skate hard and pressed for an advantage. After missing several opportunities to score the Tanners al- lowed Elora's most dangerous player to break away alone on Adrian Eppinger in the Acton goal. With spectators holding their breath Adrian made a great save giving himself and his team a chance to win. Frustrated by the Tanners strong defence (David Tysoe, Luca Mazzucco and Scott Hofland in particular) two Elora forwards took penalties giving the Tanners a two man advantage. On the power play the Tanners scored their most important goal of the season to take the lead and gain the victory. On the decisive goal Nik Aitken won the face off to Gordy McKeon, McKeon passed to defencemen Tysoe whose hard low shot beat the Elora goaltender, Mazzucco provid- ing the screen. Shortly after the winning goal a hustling Gordy McKeon skated. past several Elora defenders before scoring the insurance goal. This great comeback victory should provide ample confidence and team spirit for the re- mainder of the 2004-2005 season. Acton 7 Hespeler 2 Needing a victory to keep their hopes to advance to the Tri-county final alive the Tanners outplayed their hosts and recorded a 7-2 victory. The Tanners scored four goals in the first period by combining team play and hustle with accurate passing and sharp shooting. The strong play carried over to the second and third periods as the team earned a con- vincing victory. Offensively, the team was led by Gordy McKeon's three goals, Taylor McNabb with one goal and one assist, David Tysoe with a goal and two assists and Luca Mazzucco's two assists. Everyone played well defensively allowing few scoring chances. When Hespeler did break through goalten- der Dirk Van Soelen held the opposition off the scoreboard until the game was decided.
