Local woman to snowmobile for good cause A Georgetown woman will be snowmobiling for a good cause next month when she takes part in the Seventh Annual Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Snow Run. Kelly Clarke, a long-time friend of Shires, a Port McNichol (Ontario) woman who died in 2004 of breast cancer at the age of 42, will join other women on their snowmobiles in Huntsville February 4 at Deerhust Resort to raise money for women to assist them in their fight against breast cancer. Money raised goes to the snow run's charitable trust, which provides funding for women to help make their fight with breast cancer less challenging. The money goes to pay for medication, wigs and whatever the women may need because many of them have to stop working while being treated. Hundreds of women across Canada have been helped through the trust over the last five years. Anyone interested in sponsoring Clarke, or providing a prize for the silent auction is asked to call her at 905-873-7802. Pink ribbons in support of the snow run are available at Bos Interiors in Georgetown. Father, son in marathon skate local father and son, and friends, will take to the ice at Gage Park in Brampton next month for the ninth annual Sunshine Dream for Kids "Skate in the Park at Dark." Tony Hayward and his son Mark of Georgetown, and friends Tim Fielding, Aldo Campitelli and Darren Pennock will skate 1,000 laps, or 300 miles beginning Saturday, February 11 at 8 p.m. They are planning to finish their skate Sunday, February 12 at 3 p.m. "It's a family thing," said Hayward. "We have a lot of friends and family that participate in it." The group hopes to raise $5,000 in pledges for Sunshine Dream for Kids, a Canadian charity that makes dreams come true for children aged 3 to 19, challenged by severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses. Hayward said last year's skate raised $5,610 for the charity. Corporate sponsors in Georgetown for the skate include Georgetown Market Place, Topper's Pizza, Emerald Isle, J.V. Clothing, Georgetown Chevrolet and King Pizza & Submarine. Anyone interested in making a pledge to the event or becoming a sponsor should call Hayward at 905-873-6122.
