Racial heritage to be examined at CFUW meeting The next meeting of the University Women's Club of Georgetown will be on Tuesday (Feb. 7) at 7:30 p.m. in the Gallery of the Cultural Centre. Guest speaker is local author, Dr. Catherine Slaney who embarked on a personal quest to seek some answers to the mysterious history that apparently haunted her mother's family tree. At first it was simply an informal attempt to unearth some lost and forgotten fami- ly documents and photos but some startling discoveries impelled her to dig a little deeper. Family Secrets: Crossing the Colour Line traces her personal journey of discovery as the cloak of secrecy receded to reveal a previously unknown side of the family that had been separated by a racial divide for half a century. Today the black and white cousins joyfully share their common ancestry and extraordinary interracial history and welcome every opportunity to dispel the myth of race that transcends our society. Dr. Slaney's personal investigation led her to pursue a doctorate degree in Sociology and Equity Studies in Education and the study of the process of racialization in Canada and the U.S. The public is invited to come and hear this very interested speaker.
