Female top gun fighter pilot to speak in Georgetown Major Dee Brasseur, one of two Canadian women to be the first female fighter pilots in the world, will speak at the Cultural Centre at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, (March 7) compliments of the Georgetown Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW). As part of a Canadian Forces trial program of women in non-traditional military environments, Major Brasseur, along with two other female colleagues made history in February 1981 becoming one of the first to graduate with their "wings". After three years as the first female flight instructor at the Canadian Forces Flying School in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Major Brasseur went Women's Day observed on March 8 Celebrate International Women's Day with the Amnesty International Group of Halton Hills on Wednesday, March 8, anytime after 8 p.m. at the Shepherd's Crook, 86 Main St. S., Georgetown. Enjoy performances from local students and professional women performers such as vocalist and guitarist Sarah Burton, classical flutist Marissa Kidd, and Second Wind folk trio. Also sign postcard appeals and petitions, or simply raise a glass for women everywhere. No cover charge. All ages welcome. on to Cold Lake Alberta as Flight Commander of a T-33 Silver Star Jet Squadron and then onto fly both the CF5 Freedom Fighter and CF-18 Hornet. In 1999 Major Brasseur was recognized for her citizenship and contri- bution to Canada with receipt of the Order of Canada. Today Major Brasseur continues with the Canadian Forces as an air reservist at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa and as a professional motivational speaker making presentations to various groups all across North America. The public is invited to attend the presentation. Admission is free. This is an opportunity, especially for teens and young adults to hear firsthand from an accomplished speaker about challenging career opportunities and the importance of setting goals. Major Brasseur will also be speaking to the students of Centennial Public School earlier in the day.
