De La Franier made several great saves during the contest but the Bearcats were overmatched and outshot 43-16 by Bishop Tonnos and lost 7-2, missing the opportunity to play in the OFSAA finals. Photo by Eamonn Maher Bearcats fall to Hamilton school in GHAC final For the second time in less than a week, one of the Acton High School girls' sports teams was stopped just short of making the provincial championship tournament by a Hamilton school. The Acton Bearcats met up with Steeltown's visiting Bishop Tonnos in Monday afternoon's Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference AA girls' hockey championship game, with the winner advancing to the OFSAA finals later this month in St. Thomas. And, like the Bearcat senior girls' volleyball squad in last Tuesday's GHAC title game in Acton versus Bishop Ryan, a promising start didn't result in a victory. The Bearcats skated stride for stride with a strong Bishop Tonnos side for the first half of the contest, but the guests struck for three quick goals late in the second period to grab a 6-2 lead and they'd go on to win 7-2. Bearcat netminder Amy De La Franier faced over 40 shots in the game. Gabby Kosziwka and Hayley Halls had a goal and an assist apiece for the Bearcats. Kosziwka scored all four Acton goals in Friday's Halton AA championship, a 4-1 triumph over Aldershot for the school's first-ever regional girls' hockey title. Amanda Schroeder and Jocelyn Bell earned assists. (Eamonn Maher can be reached at emaher@independentfreepress.com)
