Bylaw may ban youths from owning replica firearms Should Halton have a bylaw in place that bans youths from owning replica firearms? That's the question Region staff, the Halton Regional Police Services Board and the police chief will soon be mulling over at the request of regional council. At a recent meeting, council referred a Township of Scugog bylaw that regulates the sale and possession of replica and imitation firearms to the aforementioned group for local consideration. The bylaw prevents those who are under 18 from possessing the gun lookalikes while on public property or private property that the public has general access to. "In terms of officer and public safety, we should consider this," said Burlington Councillor John Taylor. Oakville Mayor Ann Mulvale noted that replica firearms have become a real problem for some communities. In addition to Scugog, other municipalities in Durham Region have also recently passed bylaws to deal with the imitation firearms in response to visits from a police constable urging them to do so. The constable told those councils that since toy manufacturers are making replica guns look so realistic, it's posing problems for officers who have to distinguish quickly if the gun a person has is real or an imitation. The GTAH Mayors and Regional Chairs Group have supported Scugog's bylaw in principle. --With files from TorStar News Service Driver clocked doing 77-km over speed limit A 26-year-old Toronto man could be facing a hefty fine and six demerit points after Halton Police stopped a vehicle for speeding on Regional Rd. 25 north of 15 Sideroad Saturday night.
