SENIORS LIFESTYLES Acton seniors urged to enjoy Seniors Month JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Well, it's June already, and the provincial government has designated June as Seniors Month. So make sure you enjoy every moment. Take time to smell the roses as you pass along life's highway, and don't forget you only get out of life what you put into it. Watch for special events planned for Seniors Week at the Acton Seniors Centre from Monday, June 19 to Friday, June 23. There will be a special dinner on Friday, June 23 to wrap up the event. Victor Bissonnette was telling me about the cycle ride he had a few weeks ago with a friend. They left his home at Crewson's Corner at 7:30 a.m. and biked through Everton, Belwood, Orangeville and Hockley Valley. Took time out for lunch in Beaton and then carried on around Barrie to the outskirts of Orillia. They stayed with his brotherin-law in Orillia after 7 1/2 hours of cycling. They left the next morning at 7:30 a.m., had lunch in Cookstown, cycled along Hwy. 89 in low gear most of the way due to the headwind and the hills-- it took double the expected time-- and arrived back home at 7:45 p.m. A total of 9 1/4 hours return. Did you recognize any of the Acton Seniors featured on the Seniors Showcase on Cogeco 14 in the past week? It was a short piece done by Bob Jeffries to publicize the Walk-a-thon. Seventeen people signed up, although more people actually walked. Several participants had children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren representing them. The weather cooperated and Linda Hilts, the manager of M&M Meat Shop in Acton gave up her day off to make hamburgers for everyone. All participants had t-shirts thanks to the TD Canada Trust and the Town of Halton Hills. Councillor Jon Hurst and Centre president Dave Dodgson cut the ribbon. Jennifer McLelland arrived later in the afternoon after her twin 14-monthold boys David and Daniel had finished their nap to walk for us. She said, "Well we all get old in time, and I would like to do my part now." That's a great attitude. Fifty people enjoyed the Social Picnic last week, and the Great Bobolini truly amazed and entertained everyone. Muriel Dzierla, Christine Robertson and Edna Nellis were happy to take home prizes and Margaret Anderson was very excited to win the 50/50. Our property chair, Bryan Alder, asked me to mention the plaque given to SALT (Seniors and Law Together) at a Halton Regional Police Volutneer Recognition Awards ceremony last week. It is proudly displayed at the entrance to the lounge area. There are 15 members on the committee representing seniors in Halton Hills. I understand they will run a seminar on the importance of having a power of attorney and will in the near future, which should be of interest to everyone. We are all getting older even if we don't want to acknowledge it, and really need to get our wishes down in writing. Ruth tells me during Thursday afternoon bid euchre Francis Hogenbirk, Shirley Hunter and Muriel Dzierla had mooners. Our garage and plant sale is on Saturday, June 3, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. We hope to have a great variety of plants, collectibles, and other household items in excellent conditions looking for new homes. On June 27, at 2 p.m. we will have our Birthday Tea celebrating birthdays for June and July. Don't forget to pick up your latest newsletter. It had all kinds of interesting information in it, including social events, the phone numbers of board and committee members you might need to contact, plus other interesting items. Jill Tetreholt won the 50/50 draw last week. ActiVan activates new bus Acton resident Ron McKnight tried out the Town of Halton Hills new ActiVan bus recently at his Cook Street home. Assisting McKnight is Roger Clark, a bus driver for Tyler Transport who operates the bus on behalf of the Town. The new bus recently went into service and McKnight was impressed with the new unit, which can accommodate up to three wheelchairs and 17 ambulatory passengers. The bus has features including a "kneeling" option to allow for easier access to the unit by wheelchairs and scooters as it lowers to the curb. Additional information on the Town's ActiVan services are available by phoning the Town of Photos submitted Halton Hills, 905 873-2601 extension 2610.
