Acton/Georgetown, Friday, June 2, 2006 5 Relay for Life set for June 9 The Canadian Cancer Society's national Relay for Life event will happen in Georgetown for the first time at Christ the King High School. The 12-hour overnight outdoor event begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 9 and continues until 7 a.m. on Saturday, June 10. A total of 29 teams of about 10 persons each will circle the outside track all night long as other entertainment, such as bands and sports games, goes on. So far, almost $10,000 has been raised. Last month, Halton Hills council waived the noise bylaw for the event, on the condition that local residents were notified and a hotline number was set up. Canadian Cancer Society's Brampton/Caledon/Georgetown/Dufferin County Unit, which is hosting the event, not only held a public meeting in February and another one just recently, members also went door-to-door notifying neighbouring residents. "We know that cancer never sleeps, so for one night we ask that you support your community and its residents who have so willingly chosen to spend one night together to celebrate survival and to remember their love ones who are no longer here," said Sue Scarfone, fundraising co-ordinator told councillors at the meeting. "The Relay is meant to be a celebration of hope, a night of fun, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer." The Independent & Free Press, which has been is a media sponsor and participant of the event for the last four years, will be sending a team to the Georgetown event as well. "It's one of the most inspirational and rewarding things I've ever done," said Steve Foreman, Independent & Free Press advertising and production manager, who is also a cancer survivor. "I am really pleased to have the event here in Georgetown." The Society invites all cancer survivors to the Survivor's Reception. Following the reception, survivors are encouraged to walk the first lap of the evening, the Survivors' Victory Lap, to acknowledge and celebrate their courage in their struggle with the disease. Residents can support the Relay for Life's Luminary Ceremony, which takes place at dusk, by purchasing a candle for $5. Each candle is placed in a special bag that bears the name of cancer survivor or of a loved one who has lost their battle against the disease. The luminaries continue to burn throughout the night, providing light and serving as an inspiration of hope to the participants as they walk around the track. Whether you are interested in registering a team, joining the Survivors' Victory Lap, purchasing a luminary, or volunteering at the event itself, simply go on-line to www.cancer.ca and follow the Relay for Life links or contact the Canadian Cancer Society's office at 905-4514460 for further information. Last year, $6.4 million was raised for Camp Day and since 1975, more than 83,000 children have attended a foundation camp at no cost to them or their families.
