Pesticide Exchange event set for Saturday at waste depot The Halton Partners for Naturally Green are sponsoring the fourth annual Pesticide Exchange event tomorrow (Saturday). Halton residents are invited to drop off old or unused pesticides to the Household Hazardous Waste Depot at the Halton Waste Management Site, at 5400 Regional Road 25 in south Milton, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Participants will receive free garden giveaways (while supplies last) and will be entered in a draw to win the grand prize of a wagon full of lawn and garden items. Residents can also drop off other household hazardous waste, such as paint, oil, propane tanks and additional household chemicals, with a maximum of 20 litres per visit. "Participation from Halton residents in the Pesticide Exchange event has been excellent in past years, and we're looking forward to another successful event this year," said Halton Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline. "The event helps raise awareness about the importance of reducing pesticide use wherever possible." The Pesticide Exchange program will also be running on Environment Day, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Robert C. Austin Operation Centre (Georgetown Public Works Yard), 11620 Trafalgar Road in Halton Hills. In addition to pesticides, residents may also drop off other household hazardous waste, tires, and electronics. The Salvation Army will also be on site accepting reusable material. Public school calendar set for 2006-07 The Halton public board's school year calendar for 2006-07 was given the OK recently with the proviso the provincial government could make changes to the number of staff professional activity/professional development days, which in turn could affect student early release days. The number of PA/PD days remains at four province-wide. A recommendation to go to six days is on hold. If any changes are necessary, particularly affecting the length of instructional days, a recommendation would come back to the board and the decision would be communicated to the public, said Education Director Wayne Joudrie. For 2006-07 the Halton public board's PA/PD days are scheduled for Oct. 6, Dec. 8, Feb. 2 and June 29.
