More than a wee bit 'o fun planned for Highland Games LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Area residents will have the chance to immerse themselves in all things Scottish tomorrow (Saturday) at the 31st Annual Georgetown Highland Games. The Games, to be held at Georgetown Fairgrounds between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., are expected to draw about 5,000 spectators. "Our whole goal is to promote anything and everything Scottish," said Games president Ian Armstrong. "Come out for a day at a traditional Scottish community festival." He said the popular Georgetown event is the first highland games of the season and is usually the most well-attended by pipe bands. Opening ceremonies start at 12:30 p.m. The Games will feature pipe bands, highland dancing and heavyweight event competitions, children's activities such as Pictish face painting, wallclimbing children's entertainer Heather Whaley and a pirate's ship. There will also be a display of heritage animals with a Scottish heritage including Highland cattle and Clydesdale horses. "We've got over 450 dancers competing and there are 37 massed band entries," said Armstrong. He said this year's games will include the Grade 1 massed band competition featuring the "best of the best" pipe bands once again, after being away for approximately five years. He said those interested in hearing the pipe bands should plan on being at the Games between 12:30 and 4 p.m. There will also be Scottish fare and drink available at the eateries and Cheer Garden and fancy goods at the concessions. This year's honourary chieftain will be John Tory, MPP, Leader of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party. Armstrong said people come from all over to the attend the Games, "but the biggest draw is people who have been here before."
