Hill records first win with Nationals If Georgetown's Shawn Hill is still having difficulty finding consistency with his command of pitches, the Philadelphia Phillies weren't feeling it on Sunday afternoon at Washington's RFK Stadium. The 25-year-old Hill made his third start for the Nationals in 2006 and was nearly flawless over seven innings worked, giving up zero runs and just two hits in a 6-0 Washington victory. Yet afterward, the Bishop Reding High School grad said on the Nationals' website that he had trouble controlling his curve ball, hitting Philadelphia's Sal Fasano with a pitch and throwing another into the screen. But Hill's sinker and four-seam fastball were working just fine, showing little rust after recovery from major elbow surgery in 2004. "The balls were coming out really chalky," Hill said. "I don't know if they were rubbed up or whatever. But I was rubbing them up quite a bit. I couldn't get into a mode where I could throw them. I didn't want to start off too many at-bats with the curveball and possibly get behind. I threw a couple of good ones early in the count, but I couldn't get a comfortable grip. I don't know if I did something mechanically. I just wasn't comfortable throwing it at any time." Hill, with a 1-1 record and 1.80 ERA with Washington, likely won't have time to get comfortable in the big leagues despite his impressive call-up stint. Right-handed starter John Patterson is due to come off the disabled list and while Hill is scheduled to start again at home Friday night against the New York Yankees, there's a possibility that he'll be sent back down to triple-A New Orleans after that. "It would be unfortunate, but it's not hard to swallow," he said. "It's somewhat expected. If Patterson comes back and they don't want to put me in the bullpen, it's just the way the numbers work. I can't do much about that. Would I like to stay around? Obviously, but if they send me down, at least this time, I'm not leaving a sour taste in their mouths." Give him an `A' for effort The recent third-annual Georgetown Baseball Association house league tournament featured rookie ball, mosquito, peewee and bantam divisions with 30 teams from around the area taking part.
