A recruitment drive has been ongoing and time is running out for prospective firefighters to get their applications in before the Thursday, June 29 deadline. Part-time firefighters with the Halton Hills Fire Protection and Prevention Service face new and challenging situations unlike any other job. They not only fight fires, but also perform rescues, administer first aid, deal with hazardous materials, protect property and are often instrumental in saving lives. To be eligible for consideration as a part-time firefighter with the Halton Hills Fire Services applicants must meet a number of requirements. · They must live within 5 km (3 miles) of the station to which they would be assigned. As time is critical in responding to emergency incidents, it's not considered feasible to have firefighters living beyond that distance. Those living less than 3 km (2 miles) from the station will be given preferential consideration. · Applicants must hold a valid Ontario Driver's Licence, have a good driving record and be prepared to produce a statement of their driving record. · They must also have a Grade 12 diploma or the education equivalent and be prepared to produce documentation. · They must understand and be able to communicate clearly in English both oral and written. · All applicants must be in good health and be capable of handling intense sustained physical effort. Environment Day planned for works yard tomorrow Halton Region hosts Environment Day at the Town of Halton Hills' public works yard on Trafalgar Rd. tomorrow (Saturday) 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents will be able to properly dispose of household hazardous wastes, tires (up to eight passenger vehicle tires) and electronic components free of charge. The Salvation Army will also be on site accepting reusable items. Blue boxes will be made available to residents free of charge and composters will be sold at a subsidized price of $15 including tax.
