Police blotter Three-vehicle accident caused by lost wheel Halton Police are asking the public for help in locating the owner of a trailer that lost a wheel Monday morning on Trafalgar Rd. causing a threevehicle accident. Police report at approximately 9:54 a.m. a wheel became dislodged from a trailer traveling northbound on Trafalgar Rd. at Princess Anne Dr. and flew into the southbound lane. The three vehicles involved in the accident were heavily damaged and the occupants received minor injuries. The person hauling the trailer did not stop. Police believe the wheel may have been a spare, or fell off one of the trailer's dual axles. The trailer is described as a white, covered, 10 to 12 ft. utility trailer with the words "Peregrine Sail Plane" in blue lettering on the rear. Tuesday evening. Police report the back door of the store was open for ventilation when an employee heard a banging noise coming from the storage area. He went back to investigate and saw two men walking away with boxes of shoes. The two men fled on foot and the employee followed them. One of the men dropped a box and they both ran off. The employee and owner of the store searched the area and found two men. There was an altercation and the owner of the store's nose was bloodied when he was hit with the cast on the arm of one of the men. Police arrived and took the two men into custody. Charged with break and enter and theft, and assault with a weapon is William Jeffrey, 25, of Raylawn Cr. Charged with break and enter and theft, mischief under $5,000 and three counts of breach of probation is Jason Waligora, 20, of College Ave., Guelph. We wish you all the best in your studies at the University of Guelph Love, Mom, Dad and Dale XX Shoplifting ring targeted mall-- police Halton Regional Police are looking to the public to help identify the persons responsible for a rash of thefts from the Georgetown Market Place. Since early June, Georgetown Market Place, 280 Guelph St, has been the victim of an organized shoplifting ring. Suspects have targeted several stores in the mall including Payless Shoes, Shopper's Drug Mart and Northern Reflections. Culprits use various methods to distract store clerks then conceal stolen items in large expandable bags. Three suspects, believed to be part of the ring, are black and in their early 20's. The first suspect is male, 5' 10" with gold front teeth and a corn roll hairstyle. The second suspect is female, heavy set, black shoulder length, curly hair with pink highlights. A second female suspect has a slim build, short black hair with pink, spiked highlights. The total loss of goods has not yet been determined. Region taxes, water rates will rise Continued from pg. 1 Average homeowners could also see a 6.5 per cent increase, or about $42, in water and wastewater rates next year. This is down from the 2006 rate increase of 7.2 per cent. Scinocca explained that the hike could be attributed to the extra $11.7 needed for financing capital projects, $1.7 million needed for infrastructure upgrades, $1.2 million for hydro and almost $1 million for plant maintenance, amongst other things. Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline pointed out the rate-supported budget includes a "promise made, promise kept" by politicians in that it discontinues a surcharge implemented 10 years ago to pay for cast iron watermains-- something she said she wants Halton residents to be made aware of. "I think that's a testament and credit to the way we do our work here at Halton Region," she said. But, Burlington Councillor Jack Dennison told her the Region "shouldn't go waving flags and banners" about it, since in the meantime, water rates have gone up. Savoline countered that, "We have been realistic about what it takes to provide good, safe water," going on to argue that the Region has some of the best water in Ontario, if not Canada. While Dennison said he doesn't disagree entirely with her, he insisted the Region's water and wastewater increases have been "very high." CAO Brent Marshall then jumped in and said the Region should be waving a banner for the fact it improved the community's safety with the cast iron watermain program. He noted that water and wastewater costs would be significantly higher if the Region didn't have a good system to operate. The projected 3.7 per cent tax hike is composed of a 2.5 per cent increase for regional services, or $22, and a 6.2 per cent jump, or $23, to cover the police budget. Halton council ultimately approved having the Region portion of the budget prepared with a maximum tax increase of 2.5 per cent and water and wastewater increase of 6.5 per cent.
