Acton Seniors Centre's card players keep on dealing JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre A coachload of MIM (Men in Motion) went to the Toyota car plant recently and found it very informative. Some men from the Georgetown Seniors Centre helped our Acton Seniors fill the bus. It's nice to see the two centre members working jointly together to make interesting things happen. When we have trips we often share a bus, but this is the first time the MIM group have planned a trip like this. Hopefully there will be more in the future. Last Wednesday evening's (July 19) Euchre was well attended, with husband and wife team Don and Mae Milton holding High Man and High Lady hands. Second Man was Gerry Chafe, and the Second Lady was Fran Morris. Mike Milligan was Low Man with Stella Brunelle, Low Lady and, Henry Wedge and his wife Eileen held the Lone Hands. There will be Euchre on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 7:15 p.m. There will be no lunch, but there will be prizes. Everyone who enjoys playing euchre is most welcome. If the hot weather keeps up (or even if it doesn't), don't forget it is always cool at the Seniors Centre. You can either come in and have a chat with the person at the front desk, or pick up a book and enjoy reading it. We also have quite an assortment of magazines that you are welcome to borrow or read in the comfortable lounge area. There is cold water in the cooler and an assortment of cold drinks in the fridge for a nominal price or a cup of coffee. The August Rama trip will be on Wednesday, Aug. 23. If you would like more information, call Ruth, 519-8535124. September's trip will be on Thursday September 28. Don't forget, if you can't make it, please let Ruth know as there is always a waiting list. Although most of the activities have taken a break for the summer, the Travel Desk is always open on Monday and Friday mornings. So if you would like a little break, come in and see what they have planned. You don't have to be a member of the Centre or even over 55 to take advantage of these little outings. There are two great trips planned for August and October to Wheeling Island Tropical Casino and Resort and Mountaineer Gaming Resort in West Virginia's Allegheny Mountains. I visited it on my way to Cincinnati on a mystery trip in February. It really is a lovely spot, especially as it had a thoroughbred racetrack, swimming pool and spa, in addition to the casino. Mind you card players never seem to give up and you can still enjoy cribbage and canasta on Thursday mornings or bid euchre Thursday afternoons right through the summer. Recent mooners at the Thursday afternoon euchre were Shirley Hunter, Frances Hogenbirk and Muriel Dzierla. There have been a few suggestions for a mascot to represent the Acton Seniors Centre, but there is still time for yours. It is open for anyone in the community, so get your ideas in. Recent 50/50 draw winners were Betty Green and Margaret Schmouth. We are glad to hear that Adriana Lawless, the co-ordinator of our sister centre in Georgetown is home from the hospital, and hope she makes a speedy recovery. Join the Quest for Heroes Kids of all ages are invited to join Halton Hills Public Library's free "Quest for Heroes" TD Summer Reading Club! Studies have shown that school-age children lose many of their reading skills over the summer months if they do not continue to read. The library's reading club will provide the incentive to keep kids reading, and it's a lot of fun too! They will earn prizes and stickers, and eight lucky children will win $50 bank accounts from the TD Bank. Register anytime. Congratuations on being "Called to the Bar" July 21, 2006 MICHAEL W.
