Pipe band to take part in world championships IRIS IRWIN Special to The IFP The Georgetown Pipe Band is hoping to cap its successful year on the Ontario competition scene by winning some honours at the World Pipe Band Championships to be held in Glasgow, Scotland next week. With the influx of new members over the past couple of years, the organization now has two competition bands, namely Grade 4 and Grade 5. Since their first contest at the Hamilton Indoor Games, held April 7, through to the Cambridge Highland Games on July 15, the Grade 5 band started and remained strong, winning three contests and placing second in the Canadian Championships on June 24 in Hamilton. The Grade 4 band has also enjoyed success placing third at the Hamilton Indoor Games, placing second at Kincardine Highland Games and third at Cambridge Highland Games. make the trip to Scotland where they will also compete at the Rothesay Highland Games on the Island of Bute on August 19. This fall will be very busy for the band, which supports the local community taking part in the Acton Fall Fair Parade, the Georgetown and Acton Santa Claus Parades, the Acton and Brampton Remembrance Day Ceremonies and the Guelph Scottish Tattoo. At present there are 22 pipers and 14 drummers in both bands with members age 9 and up. The drummers are under the leadership of Gail Bennett who competes with both bands at all the games. The band is always looking for new members of any age, experienced or willing to learn.
