SENIORS LIFESTYLES Wendy Krever becomes temporary co-ordinator of both seniors centres JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Well it's hard to believe it's August already, and there are some changes happening at the Centre. Wendy Krever, the co-ordinator of Acton Seniors Centre will be taking on a new challenge. She will be the coordinator of both the Georgetown and Acton Seniors Centres temporarily, due to the retirement of Adrianna Lawless. Wendy will be in Acton on Monday and Fridays, so we will still see her at the Friday Lunches. She will be in Georgetown on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Sherry's hours will stay the same. Wendy is happy with the new arangement and is looking forward to the challenge. At least, she will not be commuting quite as far. When she and Bill lost their home in a disastrous fire, she and Bill were commuting from the family cottage in Midland. Needless to say that wasn't very pleasant over the winter months. Their home in Campbellville is now completed, and they are busy settling in. See you at the Leathertown Festival on Sunday, August 13. We will have a display of crafts, carvings and paintings made by our members featuring some of the different activities at the Centre. We will also have memberships for sale. During August you can take advantage of one month's free membership and then in September during the membership drive, pay the pro-rated fee for the remainder of the year and 2007. Paper tole and scrapbooking are continuing during August. If you are interested call Margaret Dodgson, 519-853-8855. There will be euchre on Wednesday, August 16, 7:15 p.m. There will be no lunch, but there will be prizes. Everyone who enjoys playing euchre is most welcome. If the hot weather keeps up (or even if it doesn't) don't forget it is always cool at the seniors centre. You can either come in and have a chat with a person at the front desk, or pick up a book and enjoy reading it. We also have quite an assortment of magazines that you are welcome to borrow or read in the comfortable lounge area. There is cold water in the cooler and an assortment of cold drinks in the fridge for a nominal price or a cup of coffee. The August Rama trip will be on Wednesday, August 30. September's trip will be on Thursday, September 28. That's correct-- Thursday just for the one month. Don't forget if you can't make it please let Ruth, 519-853-5124, know as there is always a waiting list. Kindergartners turn 60 A group of women who all attended Robert Little Public School Kindergarten together and went through school together, have kept in touch for 55 years. In 2006, all members celebrated its 60th birthday and marked it with a visit to Ottawa and the Parliament buildings. From left, Mary Beth Currie (Elliott), Linda Clark (Parker), Gail Timmerman (Roszell), Lorraine Holmen (Lasby), Janet Taylor (Rognvaldson), Dianne Butler (Angell), Gerry Kentner (Calder), Susan Wheatley (Heard) and Nancy Simmons (Reid). Photo submitted Government provides new guide for seniors By 2035, nearly one in four Canadians will be 65 years of age or older. That means the demand for services for seniors will be higher than ever. The time to start familiarizing yourself with services for seniors is now, especially if you'll be one 20 years from now. A new Government of Canada guide available through Service Canada called Services for Seniors is a good place to start. The guide is designed for Canadians over 50 who are planning their retirement, families of seniors or their caregivers. It lists more than 120 federal government resources for seniors and their families, including information on finance and pensions, health and wellness, housing, safety and security, veterans and Canada's military, consumer issues, travel and leisure, and computers and learning. The Services for Seniors guide offers information on how to easily access these programs through Service Canada. There's even a helpful section on how to contact provincial or territorial government offices. The guide is presented in a larger-than-average print size for the convenience of readers. You can view or download the guide at servicecanada.gc.ca. You can also obtain a copy through 1 800 O-Canada (1-800-622-6232), by email at guide@canada.gc.ca or in person at one of the 320 Service Canada Centres nearest you. --News Canada
