Photo by Ted Brown Acton Employment Centre to open next month LISA TALLYN Staff Writer Searching for a new job should soon be a little easier for Acton area residents with the opening of the Acton Employment Resource Centre, tentatively set for early September. The centre, to be located at 45 Mill St., will provide residents with free job search resources including computers with Internet access, software, fax machines and telephones as well as one-on-one sessions with employment counselors. "In effect, it's like a little office to do a really comprehensive job search from," said Paul Brophy, senior development officer with Service Canada, which is providing funding for the Centre to be operated in Acton by Halton Hills Community Support and Information (HHCSI). The centre will also offer several workshops on various aspects of job searches, including resume and cover letter preparation and interviewing skills. "We made a real effort over the last two years to look at the Peel and Halton area," said Brophy. "Acton was a place that was under-serviced from an employment perspective." Similar centres have already opened in Georgetown, Milton and Burlington. The Georgetown centre is well used. Brophy said between April and June of this year there were 1,269 visits in total to the centre and 200 new clients. Brophy said the targets for the Acton centre will be slightly less than Georgetown's because the community is smaller. "Acton was the final one we wanted to put in place," he said. Joan Barham, executive director of HHCSI, which has received nearly $550,000 in funding over two years to operate the centre, said it is for people who are "employed, under-employed or just simply looking for a new challenge." "People are thrilled this is coming to Acton," said Barham. "We hope the position next door to HHCSI will also round things out for people if they need additional support," said Barham. 71 Mountainview Rd. N.
