The team overcame the loss of their meat in a fire at Agram Meats last week and Adams was rushed to hospital in Barrie with kidney stones just before the competition started. However, despite the setbacks, the foursome defeated 15 other teams to earn a trip to the 18th Annual Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee. But despite those major setbacks that is exactly what the local barbecuing team did last weekend at the event in Barrie-- winning the 2006 Grand Champion Title and the Home Grown Award for being the top Canadian team, which has earned them a spot in the prestigious 18th Annual Jack Daniel's World Championship Invitational in Lynchburg, Tennessee this October. The team also came home with nearly $6,000 in prize money. Before the team members-- Steve Adams of Ballinafad, Scott Cormier of Acton, Marty Soberg of Burlington and Daryl Maybanks of Guelph-- even arrived at the barbecuing championship it seemed the fates were conspiring against them. For the past 45 days the team's meat for the competition had been delicately aging in their butcher's cooler so it would be perfect-- tender and flavourful-- in time for the event. But when Adams pulled into the driveway of Agram Meats on Trafalgar Rd. last Thursday morning he was shocked to find a police officer blocking his entry. He turned him away because the business was closed and had suffered extensive damage, and loss of product-- including the team's meat-- in a fire that morning. See LOCAL, pg. 3 REFINANCING?
