Acton Seniors Centre readies for fall startup JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre The August 10th Bid Euchre saw Mae Milton as the only player with a mooner. Wednesday, August 30 will be the date of the next monthly Rama Trip. If you would like to go or have to cancel, please let Ruth know, 519-853-5124. The Evening Euchre on Wednesday, August 16 was well attended and the High Man was Marie, High Lady, Pat, Second Man, Robert, Second Lady, May, Low Man, Andy and Low Lady, Lydia. I am sorry I didn't receive any surnames, so I think it must have been a very friendly group. I hope you managed to enjoy the Leathertown Festival. We met a lot of very interesting people at our booth and heard a lot of stories. It was nice to see so many people who have recently moved to Acton enjoying the Festival as well as people that had traveled quite a distance. There was a great interest in the beautiful watercolour paintings, paper tole pictures and carvings on display. The 50/50 draw at the festival was won by #46 John Lindsay. It was for $102. A lot of planning and effort goes into these occasions and it's great to see everyone doing their bit to help by volunteering or coming out and supporting the various events. The town looked particularly beautiful this year, thanks to Josey (Bonnette, BIA manager) and her helpers. Don't forget you can help, by picking up anything lying on the ground and putting it in the garbage containers. The Centre will be closed on Sept. 4 for Labour Day but many of the usual events will happen during the rest of the week. The Fit and fun class will start again on Wednesday, Sept. 6 with Gentle Exercise at 9:15 a.m. and regular class at 10:15 a.m. Card players will be out in full force on Thursday (although some avid players never stopped playing during the summer). The Happy Hikers will resume on Friday, Sept. 8 meeting at 10 a.m. at the centre and car pooling to their hike destination. We are hoping to re-start the the Line Dancing and Yoga, if there is enough interest, so come in and sign up or call Eileen Dix, if you would like more information, 519-853-0493. Fridays will see the usual sing-along or shuffle board in the morning followed by lunch and then bingo at 1:15 p.m. The next Birthday Tea will be on September 12 when we celebrate birthdays occurring in August and September. This is during our weeklong Open House (Sept. 11-15) when we invite anyone 55 or over to drop in and have a cup of coffee and see what activities we offer at the centre. Starting with Monday, it's tai chi or crafts, followed in the afternoon by carpet bowling. If you would like more information on carpet bowling call Peggy at 519853-8691. Don't forget a new session of watercolour art classes begins on the Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 9 a.m. under the direction of well known local artist Maria Sallay. Also new this fall is an evening class on digital cameras and we have had quite a few new members who joined the centre so they can learn the art of paper tole picture making and scrapbooking. There is an evening event planned for Friday, Sept. 15 to wind up the week. It will be for members only-- a chicken dinner. The entertainment will be an Italian folk dance group. Another reason to join the centre. There will be an information program offered on breast cancer detection, support and treatments on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 1:30 p.m. This is open to everyone and our speaker will be Ms. Blair Lancaster. Just a little note of interest which some people might not be aware of. The Acton Seniors Recreation Centre has charitable status as recognized by Revenue Canada. This means if you make a donation, you would receive an income tax receipt. Your donations could be a cash donation in memory of some or a gift in kind. Paul Thompson who spends many hours working around the Seniors Centre was the winner of our weekly 50/50 draw recently. Congratulations, a well-deserved win Paul.
