Annual Optimist cross-country Raiders outgun meet attracts 900 runners weekend foes for pair of wins Close to 900 athletes from 13 elementary schools in Halton Hills and two more from Burlington took part in the annual Georgetown Optimist Club's cross-country run last week at Cedarvale Park. Liam Osborne, Harrison The Georgetown Raiders peppered opposition goalies with 99 shots this past weekend and not surprisingly managed to post convincing 6-1 wins over Bramalea and Hamilton. Saturday at Alcott Arena, the Raiders, who have an 8-1 won-lost record and hold down second place in the Provincial Jr. A Hockey League's West Conference, spotted the Hamilton Red Wings the first goal of the contest less than four minutes into the game but rallied to tie the count by the end of the frame, take a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes then found the net four times on 17 shots in the third period to cruise to the win. The Raiders outshot Hamilton 45-28. Adam Campbell, Jeremy Whelan, Greg Lever, Ryan Ford, Wade Finegan and Jon Southgate connected for the Raiders with Adam DeJong and Matt Carter each drawing two assists. Single helpers went to Adam Pomroy, Finegan, Kyle Schwende, Rob Sgarbossa and Campbell. Keaton Hartigan posted the win. Friday in Bramalea, the Raiders struck twice in the first frame and built up a 4-0 lead by the end of 40 minutes as Hartigan kicked out 29 of 30 shots while the Raiders directed 52 at the Blues' net. Once again, Georgetown spread out the scoring as six different marksmen found the scoresheet. Adamo Micelli, Spencer Janes, DeJong, Schwende, Carter and Matt Sisca connected with Ford, Campbell and Finegan each adding two assists. Single assists went to Jonathan Quarrie, Pomroy, Sisca, Lever, Matt Thompson and Schwende. Saturday the Raiders host Streetsville at Alcott Arena at 8 p.m. before visiting the Derbys in the second part of a home-and-home series on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. 9-year-old 1. There are 12 divisions ranging from novice to bantam at the additional entry rep and AA levels. Championship games will be played Monday at the Mold-Masters SportsPlex, with games also scheduled for Acton and Georgetown's Memorial Arena.
