"I enjoyed having the pleasure of making presentations to people I wouldn't have otherwise met, and being able to present awards like the Business Achievement awards and Citizen of the Year. It was interesting to hear the good natured sense of humour and interaction between Acton and Georgetown." What are the ongoing issues you are concerned about? "I believe the Chamber plays an important role in advocacy with the town, region and province, and even nationally, being the voice of business within Halton Hills. This is an important and ongoing Chamber role. Our strategic plan was started during my term and I plan to see it completed and implemented in conjunction with the new board. I'd also like to see more Chamber members involved in committees. That fulfills the mandate of the Chamber of Commerce. Projects with a beginning, middle and end and a definite purpose, such as the golf tournament and Home and Leisure Show, tend to draw members' involvement." What challenges did you face as president? "It is generally challenging to get volunteers for committee work. Also, I was hoping to get the strategic plan completed. We now face the issue of having had input from directors who are at the end of their terms, and we have to get the new board up to speed. My third challenge has been to get Acton member businesses more engaged in their Chamber of Commerce." How do you see business in Halton Hills evolving? "The 401/407 industrial corridor opening up has been exciting. That will be very positive for business growth. The Green Belt will also have an impact. Business will continue to evolve as long as these issues are present." Any comments about your working relationship with chamber staff? "They have an incredible level of professionalism and expertise, and are the Chamber's greatest asset. Their loyalty and dedication to their jobs makes the presidents' job much easier. I'd also like to comment on the dedication of the committee chairs. They're proactive and take responsibility. Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Chamber and without them we couldn't exist." What will you do with all your free time now? "Time consumption was never a burden, and I will continue to devote time to our Chamber." What advice do you have for the new president? "I'll give Helen the same advice as I got from Norm Paget: Listen rather than talk; feel the pulse of committees; listen to the committee chairs. That is the best way to make informed decisions." Any final thoughts? "I wish Helen all the best during her term, and I hope she enjoys it as much as I did."
