Photo by Graham Paine Hassell earns points crown When Dave Hassell returned to auto racing in 2005 for a third time, he was just looking to compete and see if he had the same driving ability from years past. But Hassell accomplished more than that, taking the overall points championship at the recent All-Pro Modified stock car class at the Varney Speedway near Durham. The 50-year-old Hassell won several heats and features over the summer, but it was his consistently placing in the top-three that won him the points championship for the 2006 season. After his banner campaign, Hassell credited the strong support of his teammates and family for helping him claim the title. "In racing, as in business, it takes a lot of dedicated, good people to make it a success. I have had a lot of luck with that," said Hassell. Hassell's sponsors are pleased with this year's results and have already stipulated larger sponsorships for the 2007 campaign. He looks forward to next season, but is not sure how much longer he will be racing as he says common sense tells him to "let the young guys have it". Bearcats topped Rebels In Wednesday's Independent & Free Press, a photo caption from the high school senior boys' volleyball match last week reported an incorrect score. The Bearcats, defeated the Georgetown Rebels 2-0 and are in first place in the North Division with a 30 record heading into yesterday's (Thursday's) clash with Christ the King.
