Acton/Georgetown, Friday, October 20, 2006 19 Acton Seniors to get into Halloween `spirit' JULIE CONROY Acton Seniors Centre Were you one of the people that were so generous at the Rock-a-thon last month and haven't checked your ticket? Call the Acton Seniors Centre at 51-853-5951 and the person on the desk will be happy to check your number for you. Prizes are on display at the centre and can be picked up Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are available for the Halloween-themed dinner tomorrow, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. The doors will open at 5:45 p.m. There are prizes for the best costumes, but you don't have to be in costume, just come and enjoy the fun and a great turkey dinner, followed by pumpkin pie. The Doo Wop Band will entertain. Yoga classes for centre members started on Monday, Oct. 16 at either 12:30 or 1:30 p.m. There was so much interest that there will be two classes, one after the other. The classes are held at the Staying Alive Fitness Centre (opposite Giant Tiger). If you think you might be interested call Eileen Dix at 519-853-0493. Any person who joined the Acton Seniors Centre in the past six months will be receiving a phone call inviting them to the New Members Lunch on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 11 a.m. This is your chance to let us know what things interest you and get to meet your board members. If you are interested in carpet bowling on a Monday afternoon they have changed the time from 1:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. This might be more convenient for some. Victor Bissonnette kindly volunteered to head up a committee for the Acton Santa Claus Parade float entry. He will need help, so if you would be available leave a note for him at the centre. Thinking of Christmas, we are looking for a person who would like to head up a committee to arrange hampers for two families who will need a little extra help in making Christmas as special as it should be for children. This involves gathering the new clothing, food and gifts. There is always a guideline provided by Links2Care (formerly known as Halton Hills Community Support and Information) of suitable items/sizes needed. The members of our centre have always been very generous in filling the hampers. It just needs someone to co-ordinate everything. The retirement party for Adriana Lawless, our former co-ordinator of the seniors centre, was well attended and she was looking terrific after her heart attack earlier in the year, which caused her to rethink life in general. Mayor Rick Bonnette brought a gift and words of appreciation from the Town. Recreation Services manager Joy Thompson presented a metal sculpture by a local artist, whose work Adriana had admired. Joy mentioned some of Adriana's many accomplishments in her 12 years with both the Acton and Georgetown Seniors Centres. Adriana also received a digital camera and a gift certificate for her favourite spa from her many admirers, friends and co-workers-- many were present at the tea. Donna Rowley represented Acton caused a few smiles as she reminisced about some of the activities they had been involved in, and gave her a picture (which could have been used for blackmail) of Adriana in costume at a conference some years ago. Last but not least Rein Pater, a board member of the Georgetown centre presented her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and a lifetime membership to both the Acton and Georgetown seniors centres.
