SPORTS & LEISURE Perfect season is in sight for senior Rebels Overcoming a slow start, the Georgetown Rebels clinched first place and home field advantage for the opening round of playoffs after beating Burlington's Lester B. Pearson 14-12 on Monday in Halton Secondary School Athletic Association Division II senior football. The 5-0 Rebels can finish up the regular season undefeated with a victory over Oakville's Abbey Park tomorrow (Thursday) on the GDHS field, but after Monday's narrow comeback win, head coach Randy Marinangeli doesn't want his team to lose focus before reaching the next hurdle. "Don't even go there," he chuckled when asked about when a Rebel squad last enjoyed an unbeaten season. "(Monday) wasn't a good game for us and we just won ugly. We were down 12-0 half way through the first quarter and blew a lot of assignments. (Pearson) didn't have a lot of players and a team with more depth probably would have beaten us. But we should have home field now for the rest of our games if we play well." Photo by Eamonn Maher Fall to Red Wings 4-3 Road woes continue to plague Raiders EAMONN MAHER Staff Writer Earning points away from home has become a source of frustration for the Georgetown Raiders and the OHA Provincial Jr. A Hockey League club again played well enough to win Monday night, but lost 4-3 to the host Hamilton Red Wings. All seven goals in the game happened on the power play, with three of Hamilton's markers coming with the Raiders at a two-man disadvantage. Overall, the Wings had 19 power play opportunities and the visitors had 18. Six consecutive Georgetown minor penalties midway through the final period resulted in the eventual winning Hamilton score with six minutes remaining. Matt Thompson, Jon Southgate and Ryan Ford tallied for the Raiders, who are 7-0-1-0 at home but just 3-4-0-1 on the road. Four of those losses were decided by one goal and the other, a 6-4 defeat at Oakville, included an empty-netter. Georgetown also split a homeand-away series with the divisionleading Brampton Capitals, dropping the away game Thursday 4-3 before bouncing back for a 6-4 triumph here. The Raiders have slipped to third place behind Burlington in the division and are now tied with Hamilton and Oakville. In Saturday's home game in front of over 700 spectators, the Raiders capitalized on some Brampton penalty trouble and local native Jon Southgate scored twice in a 26-second span near the start of the second period to erase a 2-1 lead for the visitors. Matt Thompson and Adam DeJong also tallied to give Georgetown a 5-3 advantage after 40 minutes. Jeremy Whelan and Wade Finegan, into an empty net, completed the 6-4 result. Raider goalie Keaton Hartigan held off a Brampton comeback attempt by blocking 46 shots on the night, with the Caps finding the net twice while shorthanded. On Thursday night in Brampton, the hosts scored another when down a man early in the third period and took a 4-1 lead, with a late Georgetown rally falling a goal short. Kyle Schwende, Southgate and Matt Carter were the Raider marksmen. Brampton starting goalie Wyatt Russell, son of actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, was injured just four minutes into Thursday's game after a crease collision and is out indefinitely. This week, the Raiders play four games in six nights and then they'll get a seven-day break from the schedule.
