Potty humour kicks off Globe's fall show opening tomorrow NANCI LLEWELLYN Georgetown Globe Productions The history of toilets may be as old as 4,000 years and one could say that the development of civilization and toilets coincide. Although the topic of toilets can be very embarrassing, bathroom humour is nevertheless a part of our history and our everyday lives. So, it is with light-hearted humour that Georgetown Globe Production presents their next show, Urinetown, the Musical. Urinetown, the Musical is set in the future and when a drought of epic proportions occurs, corrupt city officials develop a way to conserve water. People must use public restrooms and pay for the privilege to do so. Citizens caught not using the pay toilet are sent to the mysterious Urinetown, never to be seen again. This musical comedy pokes fun at many other Broadway musicals and is full of witty humour and wonderful music. To get you ready for Globe's Urinetown, here's some bathroom trivia you may enjoy: · the practice of charging for the use of public washrooms is the origin of the British phrase "to spend a penny" · the average person uses the toilet 2,500 times per year · in the 1950s and `60s pay toilets were prevalent in bus and train stations in Canada and the U.S. (remember Union Station in Toronto?) · pay toilets are still used in many European and Asia countries, including Paris where coinoperated toilet booths exist at many tourist attractions · in 1890 Scott Paper produced the first toilet paper on a roll · toilets consume about 1/4 of our water supply · in Canada, 30% of our residential indoor water use is related to toilet usage · an average roll of toilet paper lasts about 5 days · in the U.S., over 5 billion gallons of water are flushed each day · Thomas Crapper did not invent the flush toilet, it was Albert Giblin in 1819 and theories are that Crapper bought the patent rights · a 2000 survey by Kimberly-Clark found that men prefer to fold their toilet paper while women prefer to bunch it up Globe's Urinetown, the Musical will be performed at the John Elliott Theatre in Georgetown from Nov. 23 to Dec. 2 and tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office, 905-877-3700. Oh, by the way, toilet usage at the JET is free!
