Raiders slip to fifth place despite drubbing Derbys A light workload recently for the Georgetown Raiders saw the local club fall to fifth place in the North Division standings over the weekend despite the fact they extended their winning string to six games with a 9-3 trouncing of the visiting Streetsville Derbys Saturday. Georgetown's Sports Unlimited Raiders were in a division with 13 other teams from across North America, easily winning their preliminary-round games before blanking Collingwood 8-0 in a quarter-final matchup. But the local Atoms had to be at their best to beat a team from Virginia 4-1 in the semis and then withstood a late Whitby charge to prevail 2-1 in the final. "The boys just really wanted it," said Raider head coach Murray Anderson. "They played so well defensively and when you score 39 goals and give up only six, that shows you a lot about the goaltending and the way the team plays defence. It was just a great experience all around from the pin exchange on Thursday to playing against teams from the States that they'd never seen before. Preliminary round-- Georgetown 6, Pro women to hit ice Friday The National Women's Hockey League makes its return to Georgetown for a fifth year this Friday as the Brampton Thunder takes on the Oakville Ice in a regular season contest facing off at 7:30 p.m. It's a fund-raiser for the North Halton Twisters Girls' Hockey Association and admission is $5 per person. The Thunder won its first National Women's Hockey Championship in Nova Scotia last March under the guidance of coach and general manager Stephen Bennett along with his assistants, Gary McFadyen and Tim Lariviere, who are Georgetown residents. But the trio stepped down from the Brampton team in May after eight years behind the bench to pursue other interests and Bennett is now an assistant with Oakville. On the ice, the Thunder has a four-game win streak on the go and is led by the league's top scorer, Jayna Hefford, who has 33 points in 16 games, and fellow Canadian women's Olympic team gold medalist Vicky Sunohara. But unfortunately for local fans, both players will not be in the lineup Friday because they are in Calgary at a Team Canada training camp for the upcoming IIHF World Women's Hockey Championships. Prior to the game, a skills competition involving players from the Novice house league will take place, as well as a special recognition ceremony honouring the coaches who have been with the Twisters since the organization's founding 10 years ago.
