Police to release details in bid to capture `Under Armour bandit' During a press conference today (Friday) Halton Police are expected to release new photos and videos from several recent robberies at banks throughout southern Ontario involving a man dubbed the "Under Armour bandit", believed to be responsible for a robbery in Acton last month. Halton Regional Police Service is working along with several other police services to identify and arrest the man named for the "Under Armour" clothing logo seen on the cap he was wearing during several of the robberies between Aug. 29, 2006 through Jan. 6, 2007. Police have linked the man to 17 robberies in total, including two in Milton, and one in each of Acton, Oakville and Burlington. The man responsible for the Acton robbery was not wearing an "Under Armour" cap during the Dec. 27 robbery at the Mill St. E. Scotiabank branch, however, police believe he is the same man due to similarities in the method used to rob the bank and the suspect's description. Police say a lone man entered the bank at 12:35 p.m. and approached a female teller. He said he had a gun, however none was seen, and demanded cash. The woman turned over some cash and the man fled out the door and was last seen heading towards Church St. on foot. The suspect is described as male, white, with a medium build, approximately 6 ft. tall. He was wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs baseball cap, dark jacket, and dark pants. Police are interested in a vehicle that was seen in the area of several of the robberies including the one in Acton. It is a 2003 or newer brown or tan, two-door, GMC Jimmy with tinted windows. Two charged in `quick change' scam Halton Police have arrested one of two men involved in a "quick change" scam last year that saw businesses in Halton Hills and Milton shortchanged. Police report between Feb. 28 and March 28, 2006 two men entered four businesses in north Halton. Three of them were in Halton Hills-- Country Depot on Hwy. 7, M & M Meats on Guelph St. and Shopper's Drug Mart, Acton. In each instance one man approached a cashier, bought a low priced item and paid for it with a large bill. While the second man distracted other employees or customers, the first man asked the cashier to change some large bills for smaller bills. The man continuously changed his mind as to what denominations he wanted. This continued until the cashier was confused as to which funds belonged to the suspect and which belonged to the business. The two men then left the stores with a greater amount of cash than when they entered. Two of the four incidents were recorded with surveillance cameras and still photographs were obtained. After a lengthy investigation, police were able to identify one of the two suspects and believe he was involved in several similar incidents across the province. The man was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 9 and held for a bail hearing. Charged with four counts of theft under $5,000 and four counts of fraud under $5,000 is Christian David Tygesen, 39, of Hamilton. Police have not identified the second suspect. Police dog sniffs out break-in suspects Two men are facing charges after Halton Police were called to a Trafalgar Rd. home by the homeowner while a break and enter was in progress. Police say at approximately 12:11 p.m. last Thursday two men parked a van, which had been stolen from another location, behind the house and entered through an unlocked door. Once inside the men took a diamond ring, medication and were attempting to take a large plasma television when the homeowner called police who immediately responded. When they arrived with the canine unit the dog found two men hiding in the crawlspace in the house. They were arrested. Charged with possession of stolen property, break and enter, failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking, failing to comply with a recognizance and use plates unauthorized for a vehicle is Mitchel Carlos Wheeler, 23, of no fixed address. Charged with break and enter, possession of stolen property, use plates unauthorized for a vehicle is Charles George Carpenter, 36, of Mississauga Rd., Brampton. Both men were held for a bail hearing. ··· Due to incorrect information provided by Halton Regional Police, the wrong age of the victim of a violent robbery in Georgetown Jan. 13 was published in the Wednesday, Jan. 17 edition of The Independent & Free Press. The victim was actually a male teenager. Police say the incident occurred at 11 p.m. when the teen was walking home on Princess Anne Dr. from a friend's house.
