Driving 101 Part 8: Don't panic if an officer pulls you over Being pulled over by a police officer can be a nerve-wrenching experience, but it doesn't have to be. Here are some tips to survive being stopped by one of my colleagues. First and foremost, take a deep breath and try to relax. Remember you are likely being stopped for contravening one of the many sections of the Highway Traffic Act, such as exceeding the speed limit, disobeying a school crossing guard, failing to slow down and proceed with caution near emergency vehicles, checking your sobriety, or ensuring you are a licensed driver with evidence of your current, validated vehicle permit and current insurance. Drivers, accompanying drivers for graduated licensing purposes, and even passengers, must identify themselves to a police officer in most cases. You Sinks, pipes taken from home The kitchen sink and copper plumbing were taken from a vacant home on Steeles Ave. during a break and enter that occurred sometime between Dec. 13 and Jan. 16. Entry was gained into the home after the rear garage and basement doors were forced open. Const. Chris Borak may be asked to provide your licence, vehicle ownership and insurance. If you are the driver of your parents' or friend's car, it is your responsibility to be able to produce these to the officer at the time you are stopped, not within 48 hours. During the time you are stopped we are responsible for your safety and the safety of traffic around you. Your safe- ty is why we ask for you to stay in your vehicle at all times, and why we do not show you a radar reading at the side of the road. If you do receive a provincial offences notice, please take the time to read over your three options carefully. If you feel your only option is to go to trial and dispute the charge(s), for whatever reason, that is one of your options. Court is where you may dispute the charge(s), not at the side of the road. Contact me personally for crime prevention tips at 905-878-5511 extension 2470, or by e-mailing chris.borak@hrps.on.ca. Please reserve the 911 system for emergency calls only. --Const.
