Independent & Free Press, Wednesday, March 14, 2007 11 Acton Ag. building gets a name LISA TALLYN Staff Writer The new multi-use community building currently going up in Prospect Park has a name-- The Dufferin Rural Heritage and Community Centre. The name of the building was unveiled last week at a Donor Appreciation Reception for the Acton Agricultural Society's (AAS) It's More than Fair Campaign. The 21,000 sq. ft. building was named for Dufferin Aggregates, the first major donor to the building's fundraising campaign with a $200,000 donation last July. To date, close to $580,000 has been committed by donors for the new building, slated to be completed by the end of May and open for use this year. The campaign goal is $750,000. "Our hope is to have it raised or committed by the end of April," said Drew Brown, fundraising consultant with the campaign. "We've done quite well." Brown said donations to the campaign are split nearly in half from individuals and corporations. He said donors can pledge money over a three-year period for the building. The $1.9 million building will be a multi-use facility that will house the Acton Fall Fair in September and serve as a venue for other community events throughout the rest of the year. Its chief tenants will be the Acton and Georgetown Soccer Clubs who will use the building for indoor soccer in the winter. The playing field will be covered in turf that costs $112,000 and is designed to provide life-like playing surface and reduce injuries. I.C. Improvements Inc. of Stoney Creek will supply and install the turf for $112,609. The supplier selection was reviewed by a committee of town staff, society members and Georgetown and Acton Soccer Clubs personnel. The installation includes a groomer required to maintain the field. According to a letter from Jim Pink, AAS building committee chair, the group has been successful in getting a $100,000 grant from the Trillium Foundation to pay for the turf. In a report to the Town, AAS's project manager Dave Dautovich confirmed that the project is on budget and fund-raising goals have been met. However there is a cost dispute between the Town and AAS related to the disposal of non-hazardous soils.
