Mayor, council call OPA NIMBY survey `insulting' CYNTHIA GAMBLE Staff Writer Thanks but no thanks is the message Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette sent to the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), after receiving what council termed `an offensive letter'. OPA-- the agency that has allowed Hydro One to twin the hydro corridor through Halton Hills-- recently sent a letter to Halton Hills Chief Administrative Officer Dennis Perlin requesting his participation in a OPA-led study on "social friction, commonly referred to as NIMBYism (Not In My Back Yard), in Ontario's electricity sector." "I think they should have had this discussion before they approved (the twinning)," said Bonnette. "If I was one of the homeowners who are affected-- losing their home, losing their barn, losing the back of their property-- this is more than NIMBYism. ... I take great exception that it's considered NIMBYism." Council members urged Bonnette to send a return letter declining the offer. His reply letter read in part: "Council has found the tone of your letter to be offensive and insensitive. RICK You referred in your letter to "social BONNETTE friction" as commonly referred to as NIMBYism, we have 66 property owners who will be affected economically and socially; I hardly call this NIMBYism.
