Acton/Georgetown, Friday, May 18, 2007 17 ENTERTAINMENT Georgetown Pipe Band off to a winning start The Georgetown Pipe Band's success in 2006 is carrying over into 2007. At the Hamilton Branch of the Piping and Pipe Band Society Indoor Games, the Grade 5 mini band took first as did the Grade 4 B, last month. Late in the month, at the Hanover Indoor Games, once again the both bands turned in winning performances. Solo pipers also fared well with three finishing in the prize money. The next event takes the band to Alma, Michigan for its Highland Games on May 26 and 27. June keeps band members busy with the Streetsville Bread and Honey Festival parade on June 2 and the Sarnia Highland Games on June 16. The Georgetown Highland Games, on Saturday, June 9, are a highlight for the band. This is the first games of the Ontario circuit and bands, dancers and heavyweight participants are eager to showcase what they've been practising the past several weeks. The band is pleased to play in the dignitaries during the opening ceremonies for this event as well as competing. July's highlight is a celebration of the band's 65th anniversary on Sunday, July 29. This is taking place in conjunction with Georgetown Homecoming 2007. The event will be held at the Georgetown Legion, starting at noon with a meet and greet. Around 3 p.m. there will be a parade down Main St. to Remembrance Park where the closing ceremony for the Homecoming will take place. All former members are invited to contact Elaine Robinson at 905877-8353 or e-mail elainer@stn.net for more details. The band is always in the market for new members, experienced or beginner, for piping or drumming. Practices are Thursday evening at the Lion's Hall with instruction available. The band is privileged to have experienced instructors Tom Anderson (piping) and Graham Kirkwood (drumming).
