Photo by Jon Borgstrom Wheels in Motion event will help buy new equipment for community pools Twenty years ago a young paraplegic completed wheeling around the world. His name is Rick Hansen and his accomplishment was nothing short of amazing. His goal then, and today (as well as raising money for spinal cord research) is to bring awareness to the difficulties faced on a daily basis by people with physical disabilities. On Sunday, June 10 the second annual Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event will take place in Halton Hills at the Gellert Community Centre. The event is designed as a walk, run, wheel, bike or roller blade over a one kilometre or 10k loop in the park. Forty per cent of all proceeds raised, will be used to fund a new "portable pool lift" to replace the aging equipment now in use at our community pools. Your support will help give a large number of disabled children "a lift" in our very active Bill Leslie Special Needs Programs currently running in Halton Hills. In addition to the walk/run, this year we are introducing a new event called the Wheelchair Relay Skills Challenge. Local and corporate teams will compete in a series of skill-testing activities while using a wheelchair to help build a better understanding of what it is like to navigate through life in a wheelchair. More teams are needed and welcomed-- you need five people for your team and must collect $500 for the donation fee to enter. Donations may be made and application forms are available at Upcoming AGMs Wednesday, June 6 Bread Basket AGM: Georgetown Bread Basket food bank holds its annual general meeting, 7 p.m. at St. John's United Church. We would particularly encourage members of the disabled community to turn out and support the event. The ActiVan will be available to all registered users at no charge.
